"All children are different. They have their own set of strengths and require personalised support in order for them to thrive. Whilst schools in the UK strive towards creating an inclusive education, many children still feel like a square peg trying to fit into a round hole.

Unfortunately, with so much emphasis on results, it seems increasingly challenging for teachers to meet children’s holistic needs and support their overall health and wellbeing. It’s worrying how many mental illnesses start in childhood, and how individuals with autism or a learning disability (or both) are more likely to experience mental health problems than the general population. More definitely needs to be done on a national and local level to make mental health a priority and question this one size fits all approach to education."

A child with disabilities often spends hours being taught how to interact with others...
But why don't we spend time teaching those without disabilities how to interact with them?

Doctors said he would never walk or talk. He started speaking at 5 years old. With all the struggles we went through with his Autism, we didn't give up!! He graduated college in a regular class setting with a 3.6 GPA. ~ Jessica T.

"I have a request for all parents reading this… Teach your child to be kind to others especially those with special needs.

Those with special needs are twice as likely to be bullied compared to their non-disabled peers .

Growing up with autism I would befriend bullies because even though I was receiving negative attention it was some form of attention. I also had a challenge understanding sarcasm. It made me an easy target and, even though I wouldn’t understand it at the time, was something I truly didn’t need. I needed genuine friends who had similar key interests. Maybe if I had less people who would do these things to me I would have had more opportunities to form those friendships.

I was inspired to write this after reading an autism mom’s post about a situation that happened to her autistic son at the park where he was treated cruelly by his peers. It reminds me that this is not an isolated incident but something that happens far too often in our community.

It doesn’t stop with autism though. So many individuals I’ve interviewed for my self-advocate video series have mentioned the harms of some key interactions.

I know of individuals with Down Syndrome who have been mocked in the past for how they look.

I know those with Social Communication Disorder who have been bullied for them keeping to themselves and being the ‘quiet kid.’

I know those with Cerebral Palsy who’ve been made fun of for how they walk.

I could go on and on.

Pledge to practice empathy, celebrate differences and educate others to do the same. Thank you.

Kerry"

Braysen Gabriel is a 4-year-old boy who normally loves to fly. However, on a recent flight from San Diego to Houston he was having some trouble.
Braysen has autism which can lead to him becoming overwhelmed and have emotional meltdowns in certain situations.
The cabin crew allowed the boy to sit on his mother’s lap and eventually roam the cabin. Braysen was allowed to camp on the floor with a blanket. ❤️

"Many times autistic children and adults appear to be in their own world. However, that does not mean they should be excluded from yours. Say hello. Offer a high five. Talk to them. Get on their level. But please don't treat them as if they don't exist."
