Giovanni Mellano emigrated here from Entracque, Italy in 1921 and began working as a laborer in the flower industry. In 1925 he opened his own wholesale shop in the Los Angeles Flower Market, and a few years later he purchased six acres and began growing his own flowers to sell. Ninety years later, Mellano & Company is still headquartered in the Los Angeles Flower Market but has also expanded to w

holesale locations in Orange County, Carlsbad, and Las Vegas. In 1970 the growing operation relocated to the beautiful San Luis Rey Valley in northern San Diego County and today the third generation of Mellanos (Giovanni’s grandchildren Mike Anthony, Jim, Bob, and Michelle) are proudly keeping watch over the company which now farms close to 400 acres of high quality flowers and greens. Additionally, since 1994 we have been the exclusive growers of the world famous ranunculus Flower Fields in Carlsbad, CA! We proudly cultivate a wide range of flowers, fillers, and greens including our signature crops Alstroemeria, Ranunculus, Myrtle, and Agonis. We are also the only North American grower of white Estelle Solidago. At any given time we are farming between 45 and 50 different products, and our farm is proud to be Certified American Grown by Made in USA Certified Inc.

The quiet weeks are the best time to remember why you started.

Summer has a slower rhythm for a lot of florists, and honestly, that’s not a bad thing. The frantic pace of spring doesn’t leave much room to think. July does.

Out here, the slower stretches are when we walk the rows, check on next season’s crops, and reconnect with the growers and customers who make this work mean something. It’s the season for the long conversations, the farm visits, and the “let’s actually plan this” calls we never have time for in the rush.

So if your shop is quieter right now, use it. Reach out. Ask questions. Come see where your flowers come from. The relationships you build in the slow weeks are the ones that carry you through the busy ones.

July is American Grown Flowers Month, and every year it gives us a reason to stop and think about where this industry is really headed.

We’ve been growing flowers in California for generations, so we’ve watched a lot change. We’ve seen stretches where it felt like the whole business was moving somewhere else, somewhere cheaper, somewhere farther away. And we’ve watched good farms, families we knew, close their gates for the last time.

So when we talk about American grown, we’re not talking about a trend or a feel-good label. We’re talking about something we’ve spent our lives trying to hold onto.

Here’s what we’ve come to believe after all these years. Growing close to home isn’t only about fresher flowers, though they are fresher. It’s about keeping something alive that’s hard to get back once it’s gone. The fields. The knowledge passed down from one generation to the next. The crews who’ve made this their craft. When a farm like that disappears, all of it goes too.

And we think florists feel it. There’s a difference in a stem cut up the road that morning, and there’s a difference in being able to call your grower and actually get a person on the line. That kind of relationship is getting rarer, and we don’t think it has to be.

We’re not here to tell anyone how to run their shop. We just believe the future of flowers in this country comes down to small choices made every day. Which farms get the order. Which fields stay planted. Which families get to keep doing the work they love.

That’s the part worth protecting. And we’re grateful for everyone who helps protect it.

Every beautiful arrangement started as a pile of loose stems.

It’s true in the field, and it’s true in life. Before the bouquet, there’s bare soil, slow seasons, and buckets of stems that don’t look like much yet. The beauty never gets skipped to. It gets grown into, one ordinary morning at a time.

So wherever you are in your own in-between, still planting, still sorting, still becoming, give yourself grace. The arrangement is coming together, even when all you can see in front of you are loose stems
