Pelé with his records.

Pelé’s life was lived at global scale, but this photograph brings him back to one of the most familiar scenes in any home: records spread out, a turntable nearby and a moment spent choosing what to hear next.

Music was woven through Brazilian popular culture, and the record player was as much a part of everyday life as football, radio and family gatherings. Even a legend needs a soundtrack between matches.

The exact date, location and photographer for this photograph remain unverified, so we’re leaving those details out rather than guessing.

Harry Belafonte with a record, circa 1950s.

By the mid-1950s, Belafonte was helping bring Caribbean music to a mass American audience. His 1956 album Calypso became the first LP to sell a million copies, while “Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)” became one of his signature recordings.

And there’s something fitting about this photo: Belafonte holding the format that turned songs into records, records into hits, and hits into something that could travel far beyond the room where they were made.

Elton John behind the controls, March 1975.

Later that month, Elton became “EJ the DJ” on BBC Radio 1, taking over the station on Good Friday, March 28, and playing his own choices for 13½ hours. He returned to Radio 1 for another EJ the DJ broadcast in December 1976.

The radio gig made perfect sense for someone whose record collection was already getting serious. Elton has said one of his first records was Doris Day’s “Secret Love” / “The Deadwood Stage,” bought after his mother agreed to get it for him if he had a tooth pulled.

Decades later, he told Goldmine he owned more than 15,000 pieces of vinyl and over 120,000 CDs, adding that he definitely preferred LPs.

There’s something great about seeing him here surrounded by the machinery of radio... turntables, records and a mixing desk .. getting to do what he clearly loved.

In 1952, André de Dienes photographed Marilyn at the Beverly Carlton Hotel, stretched out in a chair with a book in hand and a record player beside her.
On the floor is Franz Schubert: His Story and His Music, a Vox recording from the label’s Music Master Series. The original 1946 production combined narration about Schubert with excerpts of his music.
Classical music was a real part of Marilyn’s world. Her personal library included books on Schubert and Beethoven, along with David Ewen’s Music for the Millions and Men of Music. Contemporary accounts also described her spending evenings at home listening to classical records while reading.

Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, circa 1963–64.
By this point, Dylan was moving fast. The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan had arrived in May 1963, while Baez was already an established star whose records had introduced a new generation to traditional ballads, blues and folk songs.
Their musical connection was becoming impossible to ignore. Baez’s Joan Baez in Concert, Part 2, recorded during her early-1963 concerts, became the first of her albums to feature Dylan songs : “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right” and “With God on Our Side.” Later that year they would perform together at Newport, where Dylan was still the young songwriter Baez was helping bring to bigger audiences.
The record Baez is holding here hasn’t been reliably identified, and the photograph’s location and photographer are also unconfirmed. What is clear is the scene: Baez studying a record while Dylan plays guitar beside her : two people deep inside the same small folk world just as it was about to become enormous.

Jimi Hendrix had Lenny Bruce in his record collection.

This 1967 photo shows Hendrix holding Lenny Bruce Is Out Again, a 1966 LP.

Earlier that year, journalist Steve Barker visited Hendrix’s London flat and found Robert Johnson’s King of the Delta Blues Singers on top of a stack of records, with a Lenny Bruce album underneath.

Hendrix then played him an early, vocal-less version of “Purple Haze.”
