Switching gears for a bit. 🔧

Taking a small break from Warhammer painting to work on a Gunpla project. And what better kit to start with than the P-Bandai HG Heingra that I picked up from our very own Bounty Board?

Right now it’s just an open box and the instruction manual spread out on the desk. No parts freed from the runners yet. There’s something about that moment before you start – everything still on the trees, instructions open, just planning your approach. One of my favorite parts of the process honestly.

Taking a breather before the next one. 🎨

Two Infernus Space Marines painted and done. One of them actually came as a freebie from my local game store, which was a nice surprise. Next to them are the runners for two more marines from the starter kit still waiting to be built and painted.

I’m going to take a short break before jumping into the next one. Recharge, watch some more tutorials, and come back with fresh eyes. No rush – this hobby isn’t going anywhere.

In the meantime, I have a question for the community. I’m still very new to Warhammer 40K and once I finish this starter kit, I want to pick up something next. What would you recommend as a beginner-friendly kit to buy? I’m open to anything – more Space Marines, different factions, whatever you think would be a good next step for someone still learning. 👇

Space Marine #1 next to Space Marine #2. 🎨

Not going to lie, seeing them side by side is motivating. There’s definitely improvement, but I also know I still have a long way to go. Every session I sit down I learn something new – whether it’s from YouTube tutorials, advice from people in the community, or just trial and error at the desk.

A lot of the progress on the second model came from tips I picked up online and from people who reached out after my earlier posts. Thinner paint, smaller brush, let the primer work for you. Stuff that sounds simple but makes a real difference once you actually try it.

Posting these together because I think it’s important to show what early progress looks like – not to show off, but because I wish I saw more of this when I was nervous about starting. It’s okay to be rough. It’s okay to make mistakes. That’s literally how you learn.

Grateful for everyone who has shared tips and encouragement along the way. On to number three. 🙏

He’s done. Infernus Space Marine number two – complete. 🎨

The end result came out with this ashy color scheme that honestly, at first, I thought was a mistake. But the more I looked at it, the more it grew on me. There’s something about the muted tones against the black shadows that just works. I’m biased though since I’m the one who painted it – so I want to hear from you. What do you think? 👇

A few things different about this one compared to my first Space Marine:

No wash this time. None. All the shadow work came from the black matte primer underneath. That was both a blessing and a challenge – there were moments where I had to decide whether a section needed paint at all or if the black was already doing the job. Learning to leave things alone was its own skill.

Lighter blue, smaller brush, thinner paint, more patience. Every adjustment I made from my first model showed up in this one. Progress isn’t always dramatic, but when you compare these two side by side, the difference is real.

Two models down. Getting better every session. On to the next one. 🤝

Progress update on Space Marine number two. 🎨

Taking my time with this one and already noticing a huge difference from my first model. A few things I’m doing differently this round:

Switched to a lighter blue. Using a smaller brush so I can be more mindful of the details. And paying way more attention to how much paint is actually on the brush before it touches the model.

The backpack alone looks three times better than anything on my first Space Marine, so I’m counting that as a win. I’m also experimenting with manually simulating lighter colors on the raised areas, and that black matte primer underneath is doing exactly what I hoped – the shadows are just there. No extra work needed.

I’ve only painted the top half so far. Weapon, torso, and legs are still pending. But I’d rather go slow and learn from every brushstroke than rush through it and repeat the same mistakes.

Round two. 🎨

Got my next 40K miniature primed and ready to go – an Infernus Space Marine. This time I’m switching things up and trying zenithal priming. Matte black base coat first, then matte white sprayed from above to create natural highlights and shadows before a single drop of paint goes on.

And honestly? I already feel more confident about this session than my first. Just looking at the primed model, the black has already done the heavy lifting – the shadows in the recesses are there before I even touch a brush. That was one of my biggest struggles last time, so having that built into the primer feels like a cheat code.

The plan is to thin my paints out more this round and let the zenithal work underneath do its thing. Hoping I can get more details to pop this time around.

Learning from every session. Let’s see how this one goes. 👀

He’s done. My very first Warhammer 40K Space Marine – fully painted. 🎨

This was a learning experience from start to finish. I followed the intro box instructions, tried my hand at shading with Agrax Earthshade, and definitely made some mistakes along the way. Turns out shades aren’t meant to be applied like regular paint – they’re designed to flow into the recesses to create shadows and depth. Lesson learned for the next one.

But you know what? I don’t care that it’s not perfect. This little guy represents the first step into a completely new side of the hobby for me. Every mistake is something I’ll do better next time.

If you’ve been thinking about painting your kits but keep putting it off because you’re worried about messing up – look at this and let it be your sign. Just start. You’ll learn more from one painted model than from a hundred tutorials you watched but never tried. 🤝

On to the next one.
