Featured Violin Bow by: David Russell Young, Longmont, Colorado

David Russell Young had already distinguished himself as one of the most successful independent guitar makers in the country by the mid-1970. In 1975, he published “The Steel-String Guitar: Construction and Repair”. By the early 1980’s Young turned his attention to bow-making and won numerous awards for his work at the Mittenwald, AFVBM, and VSA competitions (including a gold medal at the 1988 VSA competition). This bow is the perfect balance of elasticity and strength. It has a kind of universal appeal for players of all types. It lends itself equally well to carving its way through virtuoso solo work as to blending with an orchestra or chamber group.

Francesco Maurizi, Appignano c.1850

Francesco Maurizi (b.1816,d.1903) was born into a family of Farmer’s in Italy’s Marche region. Evidence suggests that he was largely self-taught in violin making. He sold his instruments primarily to his local market. The word “rustic” is often used to describe his work which posseses many admirable qualities. Though many superficial aspects of this instrument such as the joining of the purfling can be rough and hurried, the violin is well conceived where it counts. The same roughness is often forgiven or even venerated in the works of Guarneri Del Gesu. Visually, it has a certain charm, much of it derived from the instrument’s attractive one-piece back, which is cut on the slab, along which the glow of its beautifully golden-translucent ground. Tonally, this instrument has the qualities one would hope for in an old Italian instrument and it is extremely comfortable in its dimentions.

Violin by Luiz Amorim, Cremona 2022 - copy of the 1743 ‘Brusilow’ Guarneri Del Gesù

This beautiful Del Gesú copy by contemporary master violinmaker Luiz Amorim is a concert instrument fit for a soloist. It has a massive sound (more powerful than the vast majority of authentic Del Gesú violins) and rich, deep maturity beyond its years. Amorim not only reproduced many of the objective characteristics of the original but also painstaking antiqued the instrument, capturing the essence of the original’s patina.

Viola by: Michael Gene Scoggins, Salt Lake City 1988

Michael Gene Scoggins (b.1954, d. 2008) was an important luthier in the Salt Lake City violinmaking scene. He and his former wife, Carrie Scoggins taught at the Violinmaking School of America. This instrument has a poplar back. It is an exceptionally light instrument for its size and feels very alive and healthy. It features beautiful deep red varnish, crisp clean edgework and is a thoroughly reliable instrument that offers projection, responsiveness and depth for the conservatory-level or professional violist.
