Quick one for you. Recieved some greens from Oregon at Brophy Market and popped them into one of the vases there, because it deserved better than sitting empty on a shelf. Sometimes it really is that simple. A few stems, the right container, and you’re done.

This is the kind of arrangement I want more of you making. No pressure, no perfection, just greens and a vase you love. You could even forage.

Had a girl come to my stand today who’s thinking about getting into the flower business. her mom’s been encouraging her, but she’s on the fence. And it took me right back to being a psych major, telling my therapist I wasn’t feeling true to myself because the main character in all of it was really the artist in me. I thought artists suffered. I thought there was no money in it. That’s when she told me about The Artist’s Way. How art is everywhere, how artists make the world turn, how they make money too. That conversation changed my major, and it changed my life. So today, talking to this girl, I gave her the same little tidbit: when you’re on the fence, just decide. Either way. Because the decision itself is what frees up the energy. Thats when things start to flow.

On a lighter note, I also did a flower demo over on Bill & Evelyn today. So head over and take a look. The difference between these two pages. Oh Sussanna is the work in detail. The backstory, the behind the scenes of building something. Bill & Evelyn is the polished, finished product. So if you want the pretty version, that’s where to look. If you want the person behind it all, I am here for you.

A little backstory on how we ended up in Williams, Arizona. 🌲 Back in 1978, my grandparents took a vacation up north and fell in love with it and not long after, three families (my cousins, my grandparents, and us) bought 16 acres together. My grandpa was a plumber by trade, my grandma ran his business, my dad worked heavy machinery. Between the three of them, they plowed the road themselves, put in septic, and my grandparents built home. It felt like Little House on the Prairie. Growing up there, I complained plenty as a teenager, 25 people in my graduating class, not exactly a world of opportunity. But growing up somewhere that small meant everyone really was family. You watched out for each other, you fought with each other, you learned what it meant to be in it together. It taught me compassion in a way I don’t think I could’ve learned anywhere else. Bill & Evelyn started out in East LA, Norwalk, Salt Creek, Laguna, all over Southern California but so much of what this brand was nurtured on that mountain.

The secret to a bouquet that looks like it just came from the garden (even if it came from the flower shop)? It’s all in the twist.

Here’s how I do it:

🌸 Step 1: Grab your blooms — I always send people to French Buckets, my local favorite (they have beautiful unusual flowers that you can’t find at other places). Your local flower shop or Trader Joe’s works beautifully too.

🌸 Step 2: Clean your stems — strip everything from about halfway down. No leaves swimming in your vase water, ever.

🌸 Step 3: Start your spiral. Hold your first flower, then add the next one crossing to the left, stems angling to the right.

🌸 Step 4: Keep going — add, twist, add, twist. This is the part that feels like a dance once your hands catch the rhythm.

🌸 Step 5: Leave room to breathe. Space between the blooms is what makes a bouquet feel gathered, not stuffed. Air is your friend here.

🌸 Step 6: Tie it off right at that same spot you’ve been holding the whole time — that’s your natural axis point. A loose twist tie or twine does the trick.

That’s it. No florist foam, no fuss — just your hands, some flowers, and a little patience. 🤍

Fall is my jam. There. I said it.

I’m not ready for summer to end — but I am ready for this.

Table Season is right around the corner.

This table started with something I’ve had in my head for two years — the forest floor. Branches, texture, the kind of thing you walk past outside and say, “Ooh I love that texture!” “wow, look at the color?”

Everything else came from around my house. Three vintage books from 1912 on birds, eggs and nature — the kind of things I keep around simply because they’re beautiful. And a tray that lives by my front door and catches my keys every day. It looks like something that would hold candied dates or maybe olives at Thanksgiving. Either way, perfect.

That’s the whole point. You already have beautiful things. You just haven’t put them on a table yet.

And here’s the only rule I’ll give you — move things around. Don’t overthink it but don’t settle either. Go with what feels right. Want it rustic? Wooden handled silverware. Want to mix in something modern? A clean charger changes everything while keeping that cool collected feeling down the center.

There is no exact equation. There is only what feels good to you.

Realizing Creativity is my job, my superpower... the main character.

Woke up this morning actually feeling organized. Motivated even. Ready to tackle the boring list that makes me question every life decision I ever made. And I've been thinking about why. What magic happened overnight? Yesterday I forced myself to create. A table. Content. Something. I had very littl...

This made my whole day, week, year!

My friend Gary Samuelian recently reposted and gave me a credit as his floral teacher — but honestly I’m not sure I can take much credit at all. What Gary has is something you can’t teach. He has heart, generosity, an eye for beauty, and the kind of energy that makes everyone around him want to show up and do their best work. He is like Sunshine.

I remember working with him on some pretty crazy installations — the kind that push you, excite you and almost kill you at the same time. He brought this New York sensibility to everything. Simplified. Beautiful. Confident. And he made it fun every single time.

Watching someone tap into their true talent and just go for it is one of the most beautiful things. Gary did that. And I am so proud of him.

Thank you for the kind words my friend. But the talent was always yours. 🌸

P.s. I hope I don’t disappoint on the new followers. So grateful!!!

Do you know what’s already sitting in your home right now?

Collections. Things you’ve gathered over the years because something about them spoke to you. Books, glass, silver … And those things — those collections — are the beginning of a really beautiful table.

This tablescape started with an antique French wallpaper stamp collection of Diana Garreau and my amber bottle collection. From there it was about finding the conversation between them — rich browns, soft greens, and fresh lilac. A natural linen napkin. Modern plates from brophymarket layered with vintage lilac printed bowls. Nothing matchy. Nothing precious. Just pieces that belong together.

This is what I want people to understand — you don’t need to go shopping to set a beautiful table. You need to look at what you already love and start there.

The French antique wallpaper stamps you see here are available for purchase through Bill and Evelyn — link in bio.

And if you want to spend a full day learning exactly how to do this — layering collections, building a a tablescape, creating something that feels quietly luxurious and completely your own — join us August 23rd at McCharles House in Tustin. Details in bio. 🌸
