My Son and I Boarded My Pilot Husband’s Flight in Secret to Surprise Him—Then His Announcement Over the Speakers Made Both of Us Stop Smiling ...
My husband, Brandon, has worked as a commercial pilot for nearly nine years, yet our 7-year-old son, Toby, had never actually flown as a passenger on one of his flights.
Toby talked about it all the time.
Whenever Brandon headed off to work, he would ask, ""Are you flying a big one today?"" or ""Do the passengers know you’re my dad?""
A few weeks ago, Brandon told me he had been scheduled to fly a short Saturday route to Minneapolis and would be back home before dinner.
That was when I came up with an idea.
I’m normally awful at hiding surprises from my husband, but somehow, I managed to keep this one completely secret.
I bought two tickets without telling Brandon.
My plan was to get Toby onto the flight, keep ourselves hidden from him, and let Brandon find out we were there after we landed.
Toby thought it was the most exciting secret anyone had ever trusted him to keep.
He packed his little headphones, a bag of gummy bears, and a drawing he had made of his dad flying an airplane. Across the top, in huge, crooked letters, he had written, ""BEST PILOT EVER.""
Making it through the airport without Brandon noticing us turned out to be much harder than I expected.
At one point, Toby suddenly grabbed my sleeve and whispered, ""Mom. MOM.""
Brandon was walking through the terminal less than thirty feet away from us.
I practically pulled Toby into a gift shop and pretended to be extremely interested in refrigerator magnets until Brandon vanished around the corner.
Toby was fighting so hard to keep from laughing that his entire face turned red.
Eventually, we boarded the plane and found our seats near the back.
""Do you think Dad knows?"" he whispered.
""No chance.""
""Can I tell the flight attendant?""
""No.""
""What if I just tell one person?""
""Toby.""
He grinned and pretended to zip his lips shut.
A few minutes later, the cabin door closed.
Then the speakers crackled to life.
Brandon’s voice filled the entire plane.
Toby’s face immediately brightened.
He grabbed my hand and whispered, ""That’s him.""
I pulled out my phone because I wanted to capture Toby’s reaction. I thought it would be something special we could show Brandon later.
Brandon welcomed everyone aboard, talked about the weather, announced the expected flight time, and even made one of his usual corny jokes.
Toby was absolutely beaming.
Then Brandon suddenly stopped.
A few seconds of silence passed before he spoke again.
""Actually, folks, before we leave, I need to say something a little different today.""
I slowly lowered my phone.
Something about his voice had changed.
He didn’t sound frightened.
He didn’t sound nervous.
He simply sounded unusually serious.
""Before we take off, I’d like to do something I’ve never done on a flight before,"" he said. ""There is a very special person on this plane tonight. Someone who means absolutely everything to me.""
Toby immediately turned toward me.
His eyes went wide.
""He knows!""
For a brief second, I thought he was right.
I even started getting out of my seat, expecting Brandon to say my name.
Then he kept talking.
And the second I realized who he was actually talking about, I slowly lowered myself back into my seat and felt all the blood drain from my face....To be continued in C0mments 👇
