Katherine Jury

Katherine Jury I'm Katie, an artist and creative director who believes in the magic of creating, the joy of new pla So why paint? Well, for me it's pretty simple.

ABOUT ME

You can usually find me fast at work in my studio, covered in speckles of green paint, alongside my favorite pups, June and Riley. When I’m not putting my curiosities to canvas, I’m searching for the latest antique find, learning to cook *and hopefully not burn* a new recipe, walking through my neighborhood with my husband with our baby and pups in tow, or dreaming of collecting more pas

sport stamps and traveling to new places. My desire to share my artwork stems from my belief that what we surround ourselves with becomes a part of who we are. Inspiring surroundings can elevate our souls, fuel our passions, grow our minds and communicate our stories. Art can remind us that our world is fascinating and that we are “beautiful” – intelligent, funny, capable, and wonderful. ABOUT THE ARTWORK

My work, which explores the relationship between color and mark making, is a physical process of layering and carving with paint and pastels. The pairing of acrylic washes, loose pastel gestures and thick applications of paint function as a visceral response to all that is special around me. Painting is the means by which I celebrate what is soul-stirring: the romance of nature, the poignancy of music, the vibrancy of a great conversation.

Immensely grateful to call this fun-loving, tender-hearted boy our son. He has brought so much levity and light to a season that has, at times, felt heavy and dark. Our forever sunshine guy! ☀️

A splash of color that’s giving me life! Loved working on this commission for someone extra special. The pops of corals and pinks amongst an expanse of neutrals has me ready for the burning colors of Fall. Anyone else with me?!

Say “hey!” to Fragments— a small (but personally significant) body of work that I created in the months that followed the birth of my son.

Each collage in the series was a cathartic outflow of heaviness - a gritty, unrestrained response to infertility, loss, pregnancy and birth trauma, as well as the complexities and messiness of the postpartum experience.

Working on Fragments gave me the opportunity to wrestle with what felt hard in a really honest, unpolished way.

These collages, all small in scale, sutured together deconstructed paintings, handmade papers, details of mother/son film portraits and stream of consciousness journal entries in a manner that wasn’t concerned with being pretty.

Breaking, slashing, unearthing, salvaging, stitching and patching with paint and paper mirrored my emotional, physical and spiritual journey through this distinct season of life.

As the series developed, it became clear that this collection of work was for myself. I was able to create without boundaries and to take the work to a personal place less suited for commercial purposes.

It’s my intention to carry this freedom and transparency into new work. We all soften and connect when share beyond the highlight reel. It’s my hope that shining a light on the “lows” covered in this series makes those in the thick of something similar feel less alone.
