-- Here's an 1860's look at the original "Mr. Sideburns" himself: General Ambrose Everett Burnside was a prominent Union Army officer widely famous for leading the Army of the Potomac, and commanding the Burnside Expedition in North Carolina. Mr. Burnside (1824–1881) was also a Rhode Island governor and inventor. But he is perhaps most famously known for (and forgotten about) for his exceptionally bushy facial hair, which connected thick whiskers down his cheeks to a mustache while leaving his chin cleanly shaven, ultimately inspiring the word "sideburns".
