Patriotic Civil War Yankee General "Sideburns"....

-- Here's an 1860's look at the original "Mr. Sideburns" himself: General Ambrose Everett Burnside was a prominent Union Army officer widely famous for leading the Army of the Potomac, and commanding the Burnside Expedition in North Carolina. Mr. Burnside (1824–1881) was also a Rhode Island governor and inventor. But he is perhaps most famously known for (and forgotten about) for his exceptionally bushy facial hair, which connected thick whiskers down his cheeks to a mustache while leaving his chin cleanly shaven, ultimately inspiring the word "sideburns".

Cuba has been in the news, so....

It's hard for most of us to hear about Cuba without thinking of Cuban ci**rs. But for those who might want to see a map of this current "hot spot" to track what is going on, I've taken a break from Civil War ephemera to spice things up with a cigar label that combines exotic color with geographical information.

Lincoln & "Patriotic Covers"

Authentic 1860's items are sometimes surprisingly affordable, especially given that these artifacts are over 160 years old! For the next few posts I'll feature a few images and observations re: Patriotic Civil War Envelopes.
-- Most of these surviving envelopes were never mailed, but rather were printed in the North, then purchased and glued into scrapbooks (or simply gathered into loose collections) by "Patriotic Blue-Blooded Americans" during the first year or two of the war. These envelopes are most often called "Patriotic Covers," or sometimes postal cachets.
-- I've included the "1st Round" image and a link to the RARE "Lincoln and Davis in 5 Rounds" Champion Prize Boxing Envelopes. I start with this set to illustrate the brutality witnessed in the graphics of many of these incredible "Un-Civil" War covers. All 5 Boxing Lincoln covers are shown in my listing on ebay.

Preserving America's History

Rare ephemera artifacts with historical importance (like 19th Century Advertising Trade Cards, which is my specialty) are being lost, damaged, or even destroyed every day on account of ignorance or carelessness. One way to prevent such losses is to have an item professionally "graded" and "slabbed." This involves sending a collectible item to a third-party company to verify its authenticity, to assess its physical condition, and then to seal it in a protective plastic case with a label and a unique serial number and barcode. This information is entered into the grading company's public database to prevent fraud and to make resale at any time a confident transaction.
-- A "slabbed" card with a label is not likely to be mistaken for a piece of worthless trash to be thrown away, and the card is not like to damaged when handled, or even dropped.
-- I've included an image and link to a VERY RARE Lincoln to***co card which has been graded and encased; this card is currently in a live auction which ends this Monday night, June 1st. While I personally prefer protecting my cards in archival protectors from which they can be easily removed, this Lincoln to***co card is exactly the sort of card which should be graded and slabbed given the rarity and type of buyer most likely to pay top dollar.
-- Keep an eye on this Lincoln card... it'll bring a pretty penny by the time the auction closes!

Civil War Reflections and Ephemera

Memorial Day... Civil War Reflections and Ephemera

"Decoration Day" evolved into our modern Memorial Day, but it began in 1868 when Commander-in-Chief John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic ("GAR" - a veterans' organization) established a day for decorating the graves the Union soldiers who died during the American Civil War.

Memorial Day... Patriotic Remembrances

"Decoration Day" was officially proclaimed on May 5, 1868, by Commander-in-Chief John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic (a veterans' organization) to commemorate the Union soldiers who died during the American Civil War.
The term "Memorial Day" began to be used alongside "Decoration Day" in the late 19th century and officially replaced it on federal calendars in 1971. These two cards date from the early 1900's. Happy Memorial Day... Miss America Style

Lovely Lady Liberty has shown tenderness for America from the very birth of our nation. In the late 19th Century she shows up in stunning lithographs everywhere. In most images, she is an alluring allegorical mistress, a Greek goddess type figure draped in robes and flags. Sometimes this original "Miss America" holds the scales of justice, or the torch of freedom, or even the sword of the Miss Columbia warrior goddess. On Memorial Day, she typically appears with flowers, respectfully, if not mournfully, decorating the graves of brave soldiers who fell in battle. Happy Mothers Day... Victorian Style

19th Century advertisers didn't hold back!
--- "Politically Incorrect" illustrations abound in advertising trade card images from the 1800's. Some of these cards don't miss a beat in their portrayal of the harsh realities of that era. Many cards feature scenes which today would draw censor... if not criminal charges! - - To capture the range of such images, I'll be posting a few (with limited commentary) in these days counting down to Mother's Day, starting with this "comical" one from the days of violent labor disputes. Note the caption puns: "On A Strike" / "Boy-Got-it".
