How many green tomatoes do you still have in your gardens?
🍅 STILL HAVE GREEN TOMATOES IN SEPTEMBER?
If your plants are covered with green tomatoes right now, you’re definitely not the only gardener wondering whether they’ll ripen before cold weather arrives.
September can become a race between ripening tomatoes and falling temperatures, especially in cooler growing zones.
A few things can help:
🍅 Focus on the tomatoes already growing. Late in the season, removing new flowers and very tiny fruit can help the plant put resources toward fruit that has a realistic chance of maturing.
☀️ Give plants as much useful sunlight as possible while keeping healthy foliage intact. Avoid severe pruning because leaves are still important for photosynthesis and protecting fruit.
🌱 Go easy on high-nitrogen fertilizer. At this point, you generally don’t want to encourage a flush of new leafy growth.
🍅 Watch mature tomatoes closely. Once a tomato reaches the breaker stage and begins showing its first hint of color, it can continue ripening after picking.
❄️ Pay attention to your frost forecast. If frost is approaching, harvest mature green tomatoes rather than risking losing them on the plant.
🏠 Mature green tomatoes can be brought indoors and allowed to ripen at room temperature. Check them regularly and remove any that begin to spoil.
And if some never turn red? They don't have to go to waste. Green tomatoes can become fried green tomatoes, relish, chutney, salsa and more.
Now I want to see how different September gardens are doing across the country!
