𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐋𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥.

We squeaked back into town just ahead of the storm with one goal in mind: rescue an antique display cabinet before Mother Nature could add any more water damage to its story.

It was worth making a second trip and returning with a truck (my minivan has its limitations) once we realized exactly what we were looking at.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐭 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦. Decades ago, it stood inside the old Lowell Middle School (former high school), 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 that served generations of Lowell students before its demolition in 2011.

Somewhere along the way it left town, but today it has come full circle.

𝐀𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬, this piece of Lowell history is finally home again. Now the work begins to preserve it, restore it, and give it a new chapter.

If these display cases could talk, imagine the stories they would tell.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝'𝐬 𝐋𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐇𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐞𝐫 𝐂𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐭 (𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐲 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝)

What a fun afternoon at Coppes Commons in Nappanee.

Besides spending time researching Dutch Kitchenettes, I finally got to see the newly completed 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝'𝐬 𝐋𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐇𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐞𝐫 𝐂𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐭. The best part?

𝐈𝐭'𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐭 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐞.

Walking through the museum was like stepping back into the golden age of the American kitchen. There were rows of beautiful cabinets, historical displays, and even miniature kitchenettes made for children.

Of course I couldn't leave without taking a picture with my 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝—𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐃𝐮𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐠𝐢𝐫𝐥 who was much more willing to pose for photos than most people.

And before heading home we stopped by the bakery.

Let me save you some time:

If you visit Coppes Commons, 𝐛𝐮𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐂𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐨𝐧 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝.

Trust me.

Research was accomplished.
Questions were created.
Bread was consumed.

I'd call that a successful day.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐲 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥 𝐉

When we recently brought home our early Coppes "𝐃𝐮𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐊𝐢𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞" cabinet, we knew we had to make the trip to Nappanee, Indiana and visit the museum inside Coppes Commons.

𝐌𝐲 𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞: Find my Model J.

Well... I didn't. At least not exactly.

I found several cabinets that were close, some with familiar features, but none that matched ours perfectly. That's actually what made the visit so interesting. Every cabinet seemed to tell part of the story, and it reminded me that these pieces were evolving products. Different years, upgrades, special orders, and factory changes all left their mark.

𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐭: the more I learn about our cabinet, the more confident I am that it is an 𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥 𝐉 with some unusual features and upgrades.

The museum was full of beautiful examples, historical photographs, and enough Dutch Kitchenettes "𝐇𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐞𝐫 𝐂𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐬" to keep a collector busy for hours.

Sometimes research doesn't give you all the answers you're looking for.

Sometimes it gives you better questions.

And that's exactly what happened here.

𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐒𝐞𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞?

Around here, we tend to call them 𝐇𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐞𝐫 𝐂𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐬, but this particular example is something a little more special.

This is a rare, 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐍𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐞 𝐃𝐮𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐊𝐢𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞, believed to closely match the 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥 𝐉 configuration from 1917 to 1925, complete with several desirable features and upgrades, including the original oversized flour hopper, tambour roll-front door bread compartment, wood pull-out noodle board (not porcelain), pull-out storage shelves, and an aluminum flour bin with sliding lid. Each in excellent condition.

What makes this cabinet remarkable isn't just what it has—it's what it survived.

𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐞.

More than a century later, the quarter-sawn oak still glows, the original hardware remains intact, and the ingenious storage features that made these cabinets famous continue to function today.

Whether you envision it as a kitchen centerpiece, coffee station, baking cabinet, pantry, or statement piece, it's difficult not to admire the craftsmanship of an era when furniture was expected to last generations.

A century ago it organized a family kitchen.
