How to Make Your Dahlias Last Up to a Week in the Vase:

1. Harvest at the right time: Cut dahlias early in the morning or later in the afternoon when temperatures are cooler and the plants are well hydrated.

2. Hydrate immediately: As soon as you cut them, plunge the stems into cool water and keep them hydrated

3. Keep them cool: Avoid leaving freshly cut dahlias in the heat or direct sun before bringing them inside.

4. Use a floral preservative: Add flower food to your vase water. I use Chrysal USA, which helps nourish blooms and reduce bacteria in the water.
5. Refresh the water: Change the vase water every couple of days (and add fresh flower food if using) to keep your flowers looking their best.

6. Buy local when you can: If you're purchasing dahlias, source them from a local flower farm. Fresher blooms that haven't traveled long distances will have the best vase life.

Fun Facts About Dahlias🌿🌸

Native Origin:
Dahlias are native to Mexico and are recognized as the national flower of the country. 🇲🇽

Species and Hybrids:
There are 42 known species of dahlias, but countless hybrids have been developed, showcasing a vast array of colors and shapes. 🌸🌼🌺

Historical Significance

Aztec Use: The Aztecs cultivated dahlias for their edible tubers, which were used as a food source and for medicinal purposes, including treating epilepsy.

Royal Favorites: Dahlias were favored by historical figures such as Queen Victoria and Marie Antoinette, highlighting their popularity in royal gardens. 👑🌿

Unique Characteristics

Chromosome Count: Dahlias are octoploids, meaning they have eight sets of chromosomes, which contributes to their genetic diversity and the ability to create numerous hybrids. 🐙

Color Range: While dahlias come in many colors, true blue dahlias do not exist; the so-called "black" dahlias are actually dark burgundy.❤️🧡💛💜🩷

Symbolism

Meaning: Dahlias symbolize elegance, creativity, and inner strength. They are also associated with positive changes and are recognized as the flower for a couple's 14th anniversary.🤵🏻👰🏻‍♀️💍

Growing Conditions

Blooming Season: Dahlias typically bloom from mid-summer through fall, thriving in regions with a moist, moderate climate. ☀️

Cultivation: They are relatively easy to grow, similar to tomatoes, making them a popular choice for gardeners.🌿🌸
