SECOND GRAND SLAM!!! (Well…. I shot the moose with my video camera, lol). Congratulations Josh Parsons and Skip Parsons on getting this very big bull moose. They kept their composure for this one after nearly getting trampled by another bull earlier in the morning. They both shot this bull at nearly 100 yards. The guide and I both paced the distance. Ande the guide got 115 yards and I got 98 yards.
All our YouTube followers will be binge watching this adventure next moose hunting season. I shouldn’t have a problem coming up with three informational, “How-To”, educational and entertaining episodes out of this hunt. Josh and Skip were nearly charged by a big bull moose shortly before shooting this one. We saw two spike bulls on the first day. The guides were great guys and willing to share a lot of knowledge and insight about the moose and moose hunting. Calling with their own mouth and mimicking a bull walking through tall thick brush with a small moose antler was all caught on video! Our viewers will be enjoying these episodes on the SPIKES and GILLS YouTube channel.

Truly, truly blessed beyond measure to be able to hunt! Wild caught venison is so healthy for you because deer eat hundreds of different forb type herbaceous plants and its nutrients transfer to humans. Dr. Grant Wood who is a multi time liver transplant survivor and a very successful hunter, eats predominantly wild venison and has beaten all odds of survival. Obviously due to the grace of God and all his blessings, like that of the whitetail deer, Grant Woods has been healthy and living his best life. The nutritional value of venison has been proven to be healthier than wild caught salmon. Picture everything deer eat and how nutritional it is to them and now translate that over to humans and imagine how healthy we can be by eating that meat. Obviously bear meat is next in line… I can’t express in words or fathom how thankful I am to God for giving me the ability to go into the wild and bring home meat that will make my family healthier and happier. My son Bryson while chomping down on bear steak the other night was saying how bear and deer steak is the best thing on earth. He said to me, “dad, you need to go shoot a deer so we can have deer steak again”. We only had some deer burger left over from last year. I answered my son by shooting this perfect doe on this past Monday evening filling one of three doe tags I had. I also have two buck tags. I do every year share wild venison with friends and family. Some of the happiness I feel being a hunter is being able to share the most healthiest meat on the planet with others…

A six hour sit in a blind during driving rain and wind periodically doing some “covert calling” paid off!!! I set up in a central hub nearly in the middle of three know roosting areas. Also it was an area I have know for years turkeys like to hang out during rainy days. They loaf around in this area midday. Once the rain let up a little bit around 10:30 am I did some light “covert calling” and eventually heard a distant gobble behind me. I did a little more purring mixed with clucks and two note yelps and remained quiet. The next gobble was a little closer and to my left. I called one more time and got an immediate response and I went quiet and waited patiently. Eventually one after another seven or more gobblers walked out to 25 yards in front of my blind. I picked out what I thought to be the biggest. I saw that ten inch beard dangling and I just knew that was the one.

BIG MAINE BOW BUCK!!! Thank you God! Thank you Dad! (passed away at 70 in September). Thank you “Shorty” (the DEER)! Thank you Dan, Rose and Kenney for helping blood trail and helping drag this 202.47 lb brute out of the woods.
I got a late jump in the woods after dropping Bryson off from trick or treating down Main Street. I got in one of many tree stands I have set up for “Shorty” and “Curley” the two bucks I was after at around 4:15 pm. This stand I saved for the seeking/chasing phase of the rut. This marked my first sit in this stand. Ten or more minutes in I heard a loud grunt. I looked up to see this buck chasing two does around. He grunted more and ran to the does. I thought he might have caught my scent as he bounded off out of sight. I did a calling sequence with doe bleats and ended with a few buck grunts. I did more deer calling several minutes later. Maybe twenty or thirty minutes of listening to squirrels going nuts and noises I believe to be him scraping and rubbing trees he finally showed up out front of me about sixty yards. He walked straight to me and I had to remain motionless. I managed to get two of three cameras recording immediately after spotting him coming. I had to wait for him to walk by quartering away so he didn’t see me draw back my bow. I took a ten yard quartering away shot and the rest is history! All caught on cameras too for my SPIKES and GILLS YouTube channel.
