At Noxubee General Store, you never know what you’ll find…
and this Saturday, a little live music just two booths down.

Good finds, good people, and music to match.

Antique Alley now has our very own piano and it is tuned and ready!! Because we know, there’s always room for music!

If you (or your group/choir) sing or play—piano, guitar, fiddle, or something else—and would enjoy sharing your love of music while folks shop, give the store a call. We’d love to add your name to our monthly calendar. 662-493-5032

Something about an old general store always calls me to stop, especially one close to home.

This one in Preston, Mississippi sits right at the crossroads—and people still pull in for a can of vienna sausages or a stage plank cookie.

Not much has changed… and that’s exactly the charm. šŸ’›

I’ve always wondered if I could play a pump organ. I finally got to do it last fall. Notice how busy my feet are. This is not the pump organ that is for sale in my booth at Southern Relics, but this is what it would sound like if it was restored. Enjoy.

What’s on my mind today? Well, it has to do with my grandfather (Rev. A. C. Stribling), antique pump organs, Alan Jackson, and Bear Creek Cumberland Presbyterian Church near Columbia, Tennessee.

Here’s the backstory.

A couple of years ago, while researching the history of McLeod’s Chapel Church—the church of my youth in Brooksville—I discovered that my grandfather was the last minister of Bear Creek Cumberland Presbyterian Church near Columbia, TN. That same church later became the backdrop for the cover of Alan Jackson’s 2017 CD, Precious Memories.

Naturally, I started digging. To my amazement, I even found a photograph of my grandfather in my grandmother’s photo album—standing in front of that very church. From that moment on, I knew I had to go see it for myself.

I finally made my way to the Bear Creek area last fall, located in the community of Mooresville (yes—Mooresville! Can you believe that?). The Bear Creek congregation dates back to 1814, but this historical brick building wasn’t completed until 1898.

The current owner of the church and property, Mary Lynn Orr, graciously met me there and shared its history. As I was getting ready to leave, she casually said,
ā€œBy the way, I have the original organ from the church at my house across the road—and it still works. Would you like to see it?ā€

Of course, I said yes.

We went across the road, she told me what to do, and sure enough, I was able to play through What A Friend We Have In Jesus. It was one of those goosebump moments for me— history, family, and music all coming together.

Many of you who stop by my booth at Southern Relics know I currently have an antique pump organ for sale. It doesn’t work, but it does have all of its internal parts. As we’ve visited, lots of you have shared memories of hearing pump organs played in churches ā€œback in the day.ā€ I don’t remember ever seeing or hearing one played before—until now.

If you’re curious, take a look at my next post, where I’ve shared a short video of me playing the pump organ at Mary Lynn Orr’s home in Mooresville. (Facebook wouldn’t let me post photos and video together.)

And yes—just like many of you had told me, the trick to playing a pump organ is keeping those pedals going!
