🥬FRESH FOOD = HEALTHIER, HAPPIER ANIMALS! 🦜🥕

At Clay Hill Exotics, fresh food is part of our daily routine! Many reptiles and birds benefit tremendously from a properly balanced variety of fresh leafy greens and vegetables. 🌿

Fresh produce can provide important vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, fiber, and moisture that support healthy digestion, hydration, immune function, skin and feather health, and overall wellness.

🥬 Leafy greens such as collard, mustard, turnip, and dandelion greens can be excellent nutrient-dense choices for many herbivorous and omnivorous reptiles.

🥕 Colorful vegetables add variety and different nutrients to the diet. Bell peppers, squash, carrots, green beans, and other species-appropriate vegetables can all have a place in a balanced rotation.

🦜 For many parrots and other pet birds, offering fresh vegetables and leafy greens provides nutritional variety and encourages natural behaviors like shredding, tearing, tasting, and foraging.

🦎 For reptiles, fresh greens and vegetables are especially important for species such as bearded dragons, iguanas, tortoises, and many omnivorous or herbivorous reptiles.

⚠️ But remember: every species is different! Not every reptile or bird should eat the same foods—or even the same amount of plant matter. A ball python certainly doesn’t need a salad. 😂 Diet should always be based on the animal’s species, age, natural feeding ecology, and nutritional requirements.

And variety matters! Don’t rely on iceberg lettuce or one favorite vegetable every day. A rotating selection of appropriate greens and vegetables helps provide a broader nutritional profile.

🌱 Good husbandry starts from the inside out. Proper lighting, temperatures and housing matter—but so does what goes into that food bowl!

🦎💧 LEOPARD GECKO CARE 101: Why a Humid Hide Is NOT Optional!

One of the most common things we hear is:

“But leopard geckos come from the desert…why would they need humidity?” 🤔

Because ARID does not mean BONE DRY! 🌵

Leopard geckos (Eublepharis macularius) naturally occur in dry and semi-dry regions and arid grasslands of parts of South and Central Asia. During the day, they shelter under rocks and in burrows rather than sitting exposed to the hot, dry air.

That means a leopard gecko experiences different little microclimates within its environment — and we want to recreate those choices in captivity.

💦 WHAT IS A HUMID HIDE?

A humid hide is an enclosed hiding place containing a moisture-holding material that creates a small pocket of higher humidity.

Think of it as your gecko’s personal little humidity retreat! 🏠💧

A proper leopard gecko enclosure should provide multiple hiding opportunities, including a hide containing damp material to create a humid environment.

🌿 HOW DO YOU MAKE ONE?

It’s actually really simple!

Place moisture-retaining material inside an enclosed hide, such as:

• Damp sphagnum moss
• Damp paper towels
• Another appropriate moisture-retaining substrate

Moisten the material with clean water and check it regularly.

👉 DAMP — NOT SOAKING WET!

You don’t want standing water or a swamp inside the hide. The goal is a comfortably humid microenvironment.

Replace or clean the material regularly so that the hide doesn’t become dirty, moldy or contaminated.

🦎 WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT?

One of the biggest benefits is healthy shedding.

Leopard geckos periodically shed their outer layer of skin. Access to increased moisture during this process helps them shed properly.

Without appropriate humidity, pieces of old skin may remain stuck — particularly around tiny toes and other difficult areas.

A humid hide allows your gecko to decide when it needs that extra moisture instead of forcing the ENTIRE enclosure to stay overly humid.

🌵 BUT AREN’T THEY A DESERT SPECIES?

Yes — but this is where understanding their natural habitat matters!

Wild leopard geckos inhabit dry and semi-dry environments, but they spend daylight hours sheltering beneath rocks and inside burrows.

The conditions underneath a rock or inside a protected burrow can be very different from the exposed surface environment.

So instead of thinking:

❌ “Desert animal = everything should always be dry.”

Think:

✅ “Arid animal = mostly dry environment WITH access to protected microclimates.”

That’s exactly what we’re trying to recreate with a humid hide.

🧠 GOOD REPTILE HUSBANDRY IS ABOUT GIVING THEM CHOICES.

A leopard gecko should be able to move between different temperatures, hiding places and moisture levels depending on what its body needs.

Your gecko can’t tell you, “Hey, I’m about to shed and could really use some extra humidity.”

So give them the environment that allows them to take care of themselves. ❤️🦎

🪰🦎 BLACK SOLDIER FLY LARVAE ARE IN STOCK! 🦎🪰

If you’re looking to add more variety to your reptile’s feeder rotation, Black Soldier Fly Larvae (Hermetia illucens) are an excellent option—and we have them available NOW at Clay Hill Exotics!

🔬 What makes BSFL so interesting nutritionally?

Black soldier fly larvae are naturally rich in protein, fat, amino acids, and minerals. Scientific analyses of BSFL have reported crude protein around 42–49% on a dry-matter basis, although their exact nutritional composition varies depending on how they are raised and what they are fed.

⭐ THE CALCIUM DIFFERENCE

One of the biggest reasons reptile keepers love BSFL is their unusual calcium content. Most feeder insects naturally contain considerably more phosphorus than calcium, but BSFL can have a positive calcium-to-phosphorus ratio. Research involving leopard geckos has reported BSFL around a 2.5:1 Ca:P ratio, depending on the larvae’s diet.

Calcium is especially important for supporting:
🦴 Healthy bones and skeletal development
💪 Normal muscle function
🥚 Reproductive health
🦎 Growing juvenile reptiles

🦎 WHO CAN EAT THEM?

Depending on species, size, age, and individual diet, BSFL can be offered to many insect-eating or omnivorous reptiles, including:

✨ Bearded Dragons
✨ Leopard Geckos
✨ Crested Geckos that accept insects
✨ Chameleons
✨ Anoles
✨ Skinks
✨ Other appropriately sized insectivorous reptiles

They’re also great for adding feeder variety and enrichment—watching your reptile hunt down those little wigglers is half the fun! 😂
