Listen.. with all the stuff going on in the world today, do you guys know what the Bible says about fraud??
Just some fun facts on some light reading I’ve been doing. I’ll be there later tomorrow but I’ll be glad to explain this… it’s fun in a way… if you want to know, and you do….. I got inspired by the Pickles post this AM…
The Bible speaks very strongly against fraud, deception, dishonesty, and taking advantage of others. It treats these not merely as business mistakes, but as matters of moral wrongdoing.
A few especially relevant passages:
* Proverbs 11:1: “A false balance is abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is his delight.”
→ This directly addresses dishonest business dealings and manipulating financial information.
* Leviticus 19:11: “Ye shall not steal, neither deal falsely, neither lie one to another.”
→ Fraud can involve all three: taking what isn’t yours, deception, and lying.
* Proverbs 20:23: “Divers weights are an abomination unto the LORD; and a false balance is not good.”
→ God condemns deliberately presenting false measurements or numbers to another person.
* Luke 16:10: “He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much…”
→ Honesty is expected even when dishonesty might appear financially advantageous.
* Colossians 3:9: “Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds.”
→ Deliberate deception is specifically condemned.
* Ephesians 4:25: “Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour…”
→ The Christian standard is truthfulness, not merely avoiding technically provable lies.
And perhaps most importantly regarding someone who defrauds another person financially, Scripture repeatedly warns that God sees injustice even when the legal system or other people don’t.
Proverbs 22:16 also warns against exploiting others for financial gain.
