Twenty-five years ago today, when the towers fell, the bridges, tunnels, and subways into and out of Lower Manhattan shut down almost immediately. Half a million people were stranded on an island with smoke filling the sky and nowhere to go.

Nobody called the boats in. There was no plan, no order given from the top. Ferry captains just turned their boats toward the seawall. Tugboat crews did the same. Charter captains, dinner cruise boats, private fishing boats; anybody with a hull and an engine pointed it at Manhattan and started pulling people aboard.

By the end of the day, nearly 500,000 people had been evacuated by water; the largest boatlift in American history. And it happened because people who make their living on the water did what they've always done: showed up for each other when it mattered most.

We don't know any of those captains personally. But we understand that instinct. Anybody who's spent real time on the water does.

Today we remember the lives lost, and we remember the people who ran toward the danger instead of away from it.

Never forget. 🇺🇸
