This is great book to help explain the hype around statistical analysis guessing machines (colloquially referred to as AI). Anything that you've heard about this technology - from doomsday proclamations to superhuman intelligences - is not directed at you, but rather at investors, who are drooling at the prospect that AI can replace human labor in a generational cost saving gambit. But, it turns out that AI is not so good at replacing humans after all, and its long trail of failures and capital losses are setting up to make the 2008 housing bubble look like a day in the shade.

Holy Wah!

This book fulfills the potential of the Horror genre. It starts slow and strange, then builds to a break-neck paced treatise on consciousness, free-will, tech-morality, and our responsibility to one another.

One of the best books I've read this year. I'll be thinking of this one for weeks.

A Novel

If you're into horror and/or murder mysteries, give this one a try. This is FUN! It reminded me of an Agatha Christie, but the clues are buried in floorplans that are just a little "off." Seemingly normal houses have strange architectural features that hint at something disturbing and culminate in a shocking reveal. A quick read that blends a traditional novel with pictorial elements of graphic novels. This series is wildly creative and unlike anything I've read before.

Wow, Traversal, by Maria Popova, is grand in its ambition and beautiful in its language. It spans great scientific discoveries throughout time, philosophical questions that man has wrestled with across lifetimes, and natural mysteries that continue to intrigue us. This will be in the running for our favorite book of the year (so far!).
