Inanna did not enter the underworld as a victim. She entered as a queen, and the gates stripped her of everything.

The Descent of Inanna is one of the oldest underworld myths ever recorded, and it begins with a goddess choosing to go down.

Inanna, queen of heaven, love, war, desire, beauty, and sacred power, turns toward the Great Below, the realm ruled by her sister Ereshkigal. Before she leaves, she dresses in every symbol of her authority. She wears her crown, jewels, breastplate, royal garments, and carries the rod and line of power in her hands.

She does not descend empty.

She descends decorated.

At each of the seven gates, something is taken from her. Her crown is removed. Her jewels are taken. Her garments are stripped away. Every symbol that told the world who she was is surrendered, piece by piece, until the great goddess stands bare before Ereshkigal.

This is the part of the myth people often misunderstand.

The descent is not only about death.

It is about the moment when nothing external can protect you from the truth of yourself.

The Great Below does not care for titles. It does not bow to beauty. It does not recognise performance. It strips away every mask, role, name, and illusion of control.

Then Inanna dies.

Her body is hung in the underworld until help arrives and she is restored, yet no one rises from the underworld unchanged. Something must be exchanged. Something must be left behind. Rebirth always has a cost.

The seven gates are not punishment.

They are initiation.

Inanna walks down as a crowned goddess.

She rises as someone who has met death, shadow, grief, power, and return.

The underworld did not destroy her.

It revealed what could not be taken.
