Gray-yellow paleosols (fossil soils) in the Paleocene Fort Union Formation overlain by reddish paleosols in the Eocene Willwood Formation near Worland. These rocks span the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), a spike in Earth's temperature around 55 million years ago. The shift from gray-yellow to reddish paleosols reflects changes in soil moisture.

With the quiet weather last night, we crunched some numbers on the historically cold past 4 months we have had across western and central Wyoming.

This table shows an average of daily temperatures from December 1st through March 31st. (The average temperature for a day is sum of the high temperature plus the low temperature, which is then divided by two). These are then added together and divided by the number of days in the period, in this case 121 days.

We compare these to the historical average temperature of the most recent 30 year climatological normal temperature, which spans from the years 1990 through 2020.

All of the main reporting sites had at least their 4th coldest temperature through this period. (Rock Springs could be colder, but the site went offline during the late December Arctic Outbreak). The coldest temperatures relative to average were in the central and southern basins, where persistent deep snowpack allowed inversions to form and kept bitterly cold temperatures locked in for extended periods.

NOTE: If your town is not listed here, official records do not go back far enough. There are older records kept for other locations, but they usually have stretches of missing data that make comparisons difficult.

Come check it out, lots going on.
