Visit my studio + gift shop on Main Street! Hi, I'm Rachel Elise Aughtry, and I am a textile artist in Mars Hill, North Carolina. I started Rachel Elise Studio in 2008 while I was earning my BFA in Fiber Art at the University of North Texas. Combining the skills from my degree with my life-long love of sewing, I started selling a collection of bags at the neighborhood coffee shop. Many stockists l

ater (including a few more coffee shops!), I design, print, weave, and stitch a line of bags and other textile goods that are sold in shops and galleries around the country. We are open 11am-3pm Wednesday-Saturday on charming Main Street in Mars Hill, North Carolina, about a 30 minute drive from Asheville. Our shop carries my line of bags, plus unique gifts and work from other local artists.

There are so many sweet little pieces in the Lunar Dream mini collection, but this Satchel really has my heart! I handwove this textile on my Schacht floor loom, using a twill pattern. The color palette was derived from that amazing photo by the Artemis II astronauts, which highlighted our moon’s mineral composition.

The Satchel has had many design tweaks over the years, but it’s the oldest bag in the RE lineup! I was making a version of the Satchel back when I was cutting out fabric on my dorm room floor at the University of North Texas. Currently, this bag featuring an adjustable crossbody strap, a small interior pocket, two roomy exterior pockets on the backside, and is made with a weather and stain resistant canvas.
