~Micah Witham on restorative justice: "...about the building up- not the tearing down of... it's the intentional weaving of ourselves, our very lives, our resources and everything we have at our disposal... The call of the church is to do this restorative thing where we spend ourselves in justice by creatively and intentional figuring out ways to weave ourselves back into the broken and torn places in the fabric of creation. I tend to confuse myself being so wordy and thus have probably confused many of you in the process... My primary focus is to do shows in homes. I'll bring some sample products and then have a catalog of items from the different companies that I represent that you can order from. I have only posted a portion on here and my website of what is available. I wanted to give you an idea of prices. You are more than welcome to contact me to order anything that you have seen. I may have it in stock or can order it when I close on a show. My purpose isn't so much to promote products, rather people. Once you understand the stories I know you will want to get behind and support these amazing people. Contact me to host a show! My thank you for doing so- you will get a minimum of $20 to put towards product...

made in Ecuador

"Amanda Judge founded Andean Collection in the fall of 2008 after interviewing women in rural Ecuador about their survival strategies in the face of poverty. The project was intended to result in an academic paper that presented potential programs to reduce poverty in these areas. As it turned out, instead of just writing about these potential projects, she decided to turn her ideas into an employment generating social enterprise.

Amanda learned through the interviews that Ecuador has a long history of creating jewelry out of rainforest seeds. Her research also showed that opening the global market for jewelry made out of these natural materials would bring sustainable change to these communities in a way no non-profit organization alone could. Without a lucrative market to sell their jewelry, many artisans had to forgo meals to feed their children. They needed a better option.

This was motivation enough to develop a project that would bring employment to these communities. However, there was an added incentive. Amanda has a background in jewelry design, and she knew that the global market would fall in love with the look and feel of these natural materials, as she did. Using these local materials, the Andean Collection now creates inspired designs that fuse the urban with the rural, the natural with the modern.

While still on the first trip to Ecuador, Amanda began by finding artisans who had a drive to create a better life in their communities. After extensive business training, design workshops and teaching the artisans how to use email and even write on the Andean Collection blog, the artisans were excited to be a part of a new business.

Our NYC team, with help from artisans in Ecuador, continuously develops chic new designs inspired by the fusion of our urban surroundings in NYC and the natural beauty of Ecuador. This focus on design has grounded the Andean Collection jewelry as a revered brand in both the mainstream and green fashion industries. Our collection can now be found in over 1,500 locations around the world and we currently work with over 40 artisans who hand craft each design in Ecuador, using local materials.

We are motivated by the transformation of our artisans’ lives, and inspired by the world we live in. We hope it is the same for you."

made in Kenya

"Since our products debuted in the U.S. in 2007, we've been working overtime to meet demand and we couldn't be happier. That's because at Acacia Creations we operate according to fair trade principles and return a percentage of each sale to our employees in Kenya. That means the more we sell, the more our workers and their families benefit! Also, because our items are made from recycled and reclaimed materials, the more we sell, the more we keep from being thrown away.

At the end of every month the artisans of Acacia Creations receive their regular monthly salary. (It's standard practice in Kenya to pay an entire month's salary in one single payment at the end of the month).

Throughout the course of a month, our workers are also paid a certain amount for every single piece of jewelry they make. In other words, they receive a percentage of the sale of that item before it's even sold! Depending on the item, they earn between 5 and 15% of the item's wholesale price. This ensures that our workers are paid throughout the month.

In all, our workers earn a wage 5 times higher than the national average in Kenya!! Acacia Creations also covers most medical costs for our employees and their families and we provide lunch daily at our Nairobi studio."

made in Uganda

"Sseko \say-ko\ Designs was created to help some of the brightest, most committed young women in Uganda continue their education. The Ugandan school system is designed with a nine month gap between secondary school and university. These nine months are intended to allow time for students to earn money for tuition before continuing on to university. However, in an impoverished and male dominated society, many of these young women struggle to find fair work during this time.

Sseko Designs hires recent secondary school graduates for this nine month period to live and work together, while earning money that will go directly towards their university education. These women will not make sandals forever. They will go on to be doctors, lawyers, politicians, writers and teachers that will bring change and unification to a country divided and ravished by a 22 year-long war.

Sseko Designs is a not-just-for-profit enterprise that recognizes the power of business and responsible consumerism to support sustainable economic development, which in turn affects a country’s educational, justice, and health care systems. The goal of Sseko Designs is two-fold: provide university tuition for these promising young women through a sustainable monthly income, while also contributing to the overall economic development of Uganda.

Every sandal has a story. This story has only just begun, but with your help, it will be a story of hope, success and change. Although consumerism makes many empty promises, responsible and proactive consumerism has the ability to change lives. Like the lives of Mercy, Mary and Rebbecca."
