On this day in 1865 General Order No. 3 was issued in Galveston Texas, informing a group of enslaved people that their freedom had actually been declared more two years prior.

Freedoms may be far greater today than in 1865 but we still have a long way to go. On Juneteenth Black Americans celebrate what they've overcome, and White Americans are called to examine what we can do to move the fight for freedom forward.

New Story Community Books will always stand for a free, diverse and educated America. Only by learning from our past can we work towards a better future.
