Why do I sell Usborne and Kane Miller books? Quality reading material is important to me, and everyone deserves access to it, including the youngest in our communities.
Why? Educational reading material opens up the universe of possibilities; if you can read, you can teach yourself anything on this planet. And beyond.
While working as a legal assistant in Boston over 20 years ago, I volunteered with Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts/America, which brought literacy to adults who never learned to read as children, and Recording for the Blind, which made audio recordings of books in print for the visually impaired. These two experiences had a huge impact on me; especially moving was seeing the literacy program's patrons transform in just one intake session: the looks of hope, excitement, and pride at the prospect of finally learning to read were priceless. Their world of possibilities was getting larger in just 50 minutes with me. And they knew it.
At the law firm, I was happy to be the go-to person to be the final pair of proofreading eyes before any document left the office. When I headed off to law school, I worked summers as a proofreader for a constitutional law professor and a non-profit involved with public education and religious freedom. I loved contributing to important legal printed material that made a real difference in people's lives.
When I developed a life-threatening illness in law school, all I could do besides sleep all day was read. (And watch Heather Locklear on "Melrose Place.") And read.
And read I did. And in the reading of health book after health book, I learned how to heal myself of an illness that confounded my M.D.s, who had me, in their vision, confined to a hospital bed for the rest of my life.
I pursued other avenues. I got myself well. Better than well. Because of books. Books that saved my life. And that illness led me on a new path to become a natural healer, so today I am an acupuncturist, massage therapist, qigong teacher and healer, and aromatherapist-in-training.
Now I am a mother of two who used Dr. Titzer's Your Baby Can Read program with amazing results for my firstborn and have read daily with my children for the past eight years. They love to read. They love books. They love Usborne and Kane Miller books.
I believe in literacy. I believe in educational books. I believe in humans who want to learn. Who want to read. I believe in Usborne and Kane Miller books.
