In case you missed the presentation a week ago at Slate Belt Heritage Center - SBHC!

Conductor, Performer, Researcher, Teacher, and Technician Joshua E. Long, PhD, of Art and Music Emporium, Inc. presented his lecture “Golden Age of Bands (1880 – 1930) in the Slate Belt.” Explore significant performances that occurred during a time in America when military, community, and institutional bands were evolving, admired, and captivated many. This hype caused a surge of performance tours, like the John Philip Sousa Band, that sparked local ensembles to exist such as the Bangor Yellow Jackets, Roseto Chieftains, Blue Eagles Drum and Bugle Corps., Roseto Cornet Band, Slate Belt Boys Band, Bethlehem Steel Company Band, East Bangor Cornet Band, Bernie Parsons Orchestra, and The Bangor Band along with many religious and institutional bands. The Golden Age of Bands was an era in which genuine enthusiasm for music and community involvement was clearly evident, and when towns sought to fund local civic music programs. The discussion provided an overview of that time through the repertoire performed, historical musical engagement, and musical groups that existed and flourished.

In our forty-eighth AME Podcast, we continue our quest to serve artistic excellence through a conversation with Michelle & Stuart Bozievich, both who have continued making music! Stuart talks about his hard work and dedication at a young age to perform music from private lessons with piano to his motivation to compete for chair placement in high school. Michelle discusses her admiration for her teachers for giving her interest and experiences that have lasted a lifetime. What is interesting about both Michelle and Stuart is their reflection on how music making experiences have meant so much. Performing in a military bunker, thinking how your veteran grandfather listened to this music, watching the audience members having tears during a concert, and so on, music for Michelle and Stuart provide such a strong connection and validation. Stuart was provided the sense of family through music making in which motivated him to continue learning in his adult life by taking college courses focused on improvisation. Michelle shares how the pieces that are picked for the concert, the purpose of the performance and event, the meanings shared during performances, and so on provide a story that she wants to be a part of. For both Michelle and Stuart, music making is very influential in their life, an experience they always learn from and cherish. “Sitting around is not smart, make music, just go do it!”

In our forty-seventh AME Podcast, we continue our quest to serve artistic excellence through a conversation with Leigh Hurtz, music teacher, band director, and euphonium princess! Given a baritone during the summer of 3rd grade, Leigh began making music with her cousins in band and found social connection through music making very early in life. Active in many musical organizations today such as the Little German Band of State College, State College Municipal Band, and the Bellefonte Community Band to name a few, participation has become very intense and enjoyable as you will see Leigh at an abundance of performances per year. She describes the excitement from all these performances and her unhappy time when not performing during the winter months. It is the community, memories, bonds with musicians, emotions both musicians and audience experience, and the collaborative opportunities which motivates Leigh to participate with these musical organizations. These experiences have led Leigh to a very fulfilling music education career where she provides team building, confidence, and abilities for school age students to self-regulate with music while also providing appreciation of music. Leigh also continues to give back to adult music makers by helping others be active in various music ensembles and other event planning opportunities. Leigh is the Director of the Band Camp for Adult Musicians (https://www.bcfam.org), a yearly June endeavor where adults can participate in music making for an entire week at a band camp. Musicians work with retire military musicians, current music professors, and other community-based teachers. These music making opportunities are filled with confidence and provide not only music making for adults but gives participants a strong purpose through music.
