The New England Confectionery Company, better known as NECCO, traces its roots to 1847 when Boston pharmacist Oliver Chase invented a machine that transformed candy production and led to the creation of Necco Wafers, one of America’s oldest continuously sold candy brands. Produced in the Boston area for more than 170 years, the colorful wafers became a familiar sight from Civil War rations to corner-store candy counters. Although the original NECCO company closed in 2018, the brand survived and Necco Wafers remain a lasting piece of Boston’s confectionery history.
