What a THRILL for the MCHS Concert Choir to work with the one and only Stacey Gibbs today! Seven years ago I won a commission from him in a lottery. He arranged “Let the Church Roll On” for us to premiere at the 2016 ACDA Convention. Stacey worked his magic with us today, and we are excited to sing it again for our concert on May 17th. If you haven’t heard this piece I encourage you to give it a listen:

It was pure joy for the MCHS Concert Choir to have a clinic session with our good friend Dr. Guzman from Luther College on Wednesday! He worked with us on stylistic authenticity for "Tumbando Cana" as well as salsa dancing! Dr. Guzman arranged "Casita de Campo" for the MCHS Concert Choir to sing at the 2010 International Habaneras Festival in Torrevieja Spain - if you don't know this beautiful piece I strongly recommend you check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-u4qnwinb0

The Mason City High School Concert Choir was honored to work with award winning composer and conductor Chris Maunu on Tuesday! We are very excited to premiere his new work “Wind of Night” as part of a consortium! This powerful and poignant musical soundscape has been incredibly rewarding for our students to explore how anxiety and depression can creep past our defenses when we feel vulnerable. As Chris shared with us today, his latest composition helps us to discover how we can find the strength to triumph over fear and doubt. “Sing not, o wind, your fearful song of chaos for the hungry spirit.”

Chris Maunu says: “This incredible poem is deep and full of drama. The words provide a landscape of rich imagery. The chorus sets the mood of the piece with wind sounds, while the soaring accompaniment enhances the drama. The undulating arpeggiations paint a picture of the relentless rising and falling of the wind. The vocal lines are robust and full-throated, while maintaining a sense of clarity so this powerful text can be more easily communicated to the listener. Allow yourself to be swept up in the chaotic sounds of a shadowy, frantic, windy night.”

Thank you Chris for sharing your gifts with us, creating such an intense and meaningful composition that both challenges and inspires our choir and audience!

Join us Tuesday, May 17th at 7:30 pm in NIACC Auditorium for the Premiere of this stunning new work!

The MCHS Chamber Choir had a wonderful opportunity to work with professional composer Christine Donkin Monday evening. We are thrilled to be a part of a consortium with Graphite Publishing to premiere her new work "Sorrow Into Song." This piece has been an unforgettable emotional journey for our Chamber Choir. The soprano and alto sections primarily sing complex rhythmic contrapuntal melodies on "la" that are based on what the composer's mother would sing when she could no longer talk. Here is what Christine Donkin says about this:

"Sorrow Into Song" was inspired by my mother, who passed away in April 2021. In the last years of her life, she was unable to speak or understand language due to dementia, but she never stopped singing. As communication became more and more difficult, and as she gradually stopped recognizing her friends and family, it became clear that music was the last remaining connection that we had with her. The way that my mother continued “singing in hard wind ceaselessly” after she lost the ability to speak is reflected in the way that I have set the poem: while the tenor and bass parts contain all of the text, the soprano and alto parts consist almost entirely of wordless singing. The only words sung by the sopranos and altos are “rise from pain” – words which I think encapsulate both the essence of the poem and the role of music in my mother's life, especially when she was ill.

Join us Tuesday, May 17th at 7:30 pm in NIACC Auditorium for the Premiere of this stunning new work!
