Some of my favorite frames from Searching for Real Golf vol 3 which you can watch at the link in my bio. In this video we discuss golf’s newfound cultural relevance & the commoditization of influence following the online shift to algorithmically driven content. Which is a lot of words to ask a simple question: “Is golf… cool?”

Thanks for watching and for the support on the first few videos in the series. I hit a breaking point over the summer with making algoslop and I think I kinda just decided I don’t want to do it anymore. Longer, more thoughtful content is interesting for me to make and hopefully more enjoyable to watch.

“Searching for Real Golf” is a series of video essays about topics in golf that I find interesting & feel are not properly covered. All around the core thesis that golf has lost touch with its simple, natural, and even rugged roots. The first episode is about how the obsession with fast greens is bad for the health of the game.

Two days in and the response to vol. 1 has been really nice to see. I’m glad to see there are others who feel the same way as I do. The game was never meant to be about runaway hype. If you’d like to watch the full video, the link is in my bio.

First few holes from Oporto. You can catch the full video at the link in my bio. This opening hole had a nice friendly tee shot and being downwind into the firm playing field certainly helped me to swing freely.

290 yards downwind with some crazy firm fairways here. I usually carry this club about 240 and it hopped all the way up greenside. Tidy bunker shot out of the sand for a nice start.

Cross the road to get to holes 3-8 and this part of the course is much more exposed to the wind. I was between clubs on this par 3 and came up well short. Hit the lag putt with good pace just didn’t properly read the putt. Sometimes when I’m filming I rush through things like reading greens as I am conscious of not taking up too much time. I think I’d have liked this one back!

Here are some of my favorite shots from a weekend in Porto where I played three great links course, Estela, Miramar, and Oporto. I brought the camera and documented what I could including my full rounds at Estela and Oporto. You can find the first of these videos at the link in my bio!

Fun fact: golf is not a skill that can be improved on- right now is as good as you will ever be. If, despite that, you still want to practice- here’s how to get it done in NYC

Did I mention this course is all about positioning??

At a course full of “they’d never build that today”- 18 is easily the most wild of the bunch.

I think it’s one of the most unique holes I’ve ever played and it kinda got me wondering: usually the highlight hole at any historic course is the “could never be built today” hole. But why? Why can’t modern architects be bold and try crazy absurd things?

I feel a bit that greens committees full of armchair architects and big budget projects worried about playing it safe have put a dent on the overall creativity in the gc architecture space. Would be cool to see people build big bold things like Yale again!

Do yourself a favor and get down to once it finally warms up! This spot is one of my favorites around the city. Very solid value + a fun layout that is easy to walk. It’s an approachable course with interesting greens which keeps it interesting for players of all skill levels - but you can definitely score out there if you’re hitting it well. Which is always fun in my book!

We sent a ton of people down there last year and everyone I spoke to reported back that it was well worth the trip! Add it to the list 👊👊
