Over the years, thousands of our users have discovered photos in our library that are a part of their family story. As stewards of this historic collection, it’s our privilege to share these stories with you.

Kicking off our story series are words from Elda Stone of Lake County, Illinois:

“My parents, Richard and Gertrude Rost, bought this house and 10 acres on Kelsey Road, Barrington, IL, around 1944 and raised three children there. The area around us was mostly farms for many years. They bought a horse for my brother, and we had various other critters. My dad drove many commuting hours to work in Chicago, and it wasn’t until later in life that I realized what a sacrifice he made in order to choose this kind of idyllic country lifestyle for us all. Our mother died in 1983 and Dad sold the property in the 1990s. Both are gone now, much has changed in the neighborhood, but the house still stands now in 2014.”
— Elda Stone

This week we shared with you the announcement of our new acquisition of the historic Lockwood, Kessler & Bartlett Aerial Photography Collection.

As we’re beginning the work of organizing and digitizing these photographs, we’ve already found some GEMS! What do you think?

    1.    2003 Lower Manhattan

    2.    Early 1970s of Battery Park, WTC is on the far left of the frame...interesting historically because that landfill was mostly material from the construction of the WTC.

    3.    Mid 1960s, taken at dusk which starts to show some of the lights of the city, Statue of Liberty is visible on the top right, as well as the Empire State Building.

Introducing, one of the most significant additions to Vintage Aerial’s archive to date…the historic Lockwood, Kessler & Bartlett Aerial Photography Collection!

This collection comprises an estimated 1,600 canisters of large format aerial film holding roughly 500,000 frames, documenting aerial surveys flown from the late 1940s through the 1990s across Long Island and the greater New York metropolitan region, New England, and Puerto Rico.

The acquisition continues Vintage Aerial’s mission of rescuing at-risk aerial archives and returning that imagery to the communities it documents.

This massive collection will take work to get ready for viewing on our site, but we’ll keep our members updated as we go. Be sure to follow the link in our bio to sign up for updates and hit the 🔔/follow button on this page to get first looks at some of the other amazing photos we find along the way!

How are aerial images captured? The practice is complex, as is anything in the world of aviation, but the formula is simple: PILOT, PLANE, CAMERA, MAP.

Flight maps not only informed pilots where to go, but served as a record of where they had photographed. We’re fortunate enough to have flight maps in our collection with original pilot notations!

Here is an example of a georeferenced map. Watch the video to see how we digitized the flight paths to create estimated geocoded locations of each photo!

Spring is in the air — and for some families, it's been in the soil for generations. 🌱

This 1988 aerial photo of Brenckle's Farms & Greenhouses in Butler County, PA is more than just a snapshot — it's a piece of family history. Those greenhouses represent years of early mornings, dirt under fingernails, and a love for growing things that gets passed down, not taught.

Vintage aerial photos like this have a way of bringing it all back — the people, the work, the legacy.
