Smoke conditions change daily - the wind, or lack of it, determines the air quality.

The sun at 6:00 AM trying to pe*****te the smoke….this is actually fantastic for a bit of steelhead fishing.

We hope this helps everyone understand the framework and the goal wild steelhead numbers. We know this: Steelhead fishing on the Deschutes will close this year on August 15. It may reopen by September 15 - but we need to hit the numbers in order for that to happen.

Tried to post this yesterday…..didn’t post. Sadly, it looks like the Deschutes steelhead fishery is going to close by August 15. Our numbers over Bonneville were not enough to keep the fishery open.

Bright sunny hot days and cool evenings - great camping weather and very few anglers on the river!

FUll moon was actually on Monday the 29th, so the moon is now waning (getting smaller) and should not have any effect on your fishing this weekend.

June is a great month to hit the river! Crowds are gone and the Caddis are thick!!

Our fearless leader!

John Hazel and his little Red Ranger...by the time this photo was taken in the mid-1980's, John had already figured out what his life was about: get in the truck and go fishing. With all the intention of a Buddhist monk, (minus the austerity measures) John did just that. The trucks have changed over the years, but his singular dedication to the craft of steelhead fly-fishing has not. A fifty-year career as a guide, co-owner of Deschutes Angler, and a long history in several campaigns to protect and restore steelhead waters are worth hearing about. Come see and hear John's stories, on stage alongside Bill Bakke, Bill McMillan, Steve Pettit and Randle Stetzer, at The Mission Theater, 1624 NW Glisan St., Tuesday June 9th. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. Get your tickets at: https://www.mcmenamins.com/events/276475-reeling-in-the-years-an-evening-with-four-steelhead-masters
