🌳 Mercantile Mood: Wood With a Story

There’s something about vintage wood that just makes a room feel warm and collected. ❤️

This week, I found myself stopping for all kinds of beautiful wooden pieces throughout the Merc—cabinets, shelves, racks and storage pieces, each with its own personality.

And one of my favorite things about vintage pieces? You don’t always have to use them the way they were originally intended!

✨ A vintage cabinet can become a bookcase or display cabinet.
🌿 A shelf can show off your favorite treasures.
🧺 A little rack meant for spoons can become the perfect place to display vintage handkerchiefs.
📚 And those little drawers and cubbies? Well…there’s always something that needs a home!

Some are beautifully carved. Some are wonderfully simple. Some have that gorgeous vintage wood grain that you just don’t see in newer furniture.

They’re practical, they’re pretty, and they bring a little history into your home.

Here are just a few of the wooden treasures that caught my eye this week at the Merc. 👀

👀 What Caught My Eye at the Merc!

You just never know what’s going to catch your eye when you’re wandering the Merc… and today I found a little bit of everything!

📚 Something Vintage: A publisher-bound volume of Collier’s The National Weekly containing weekly issues from 1939. The illustrations and advertisements are a peek right into another time!

🪵 Something Useful: A charming vintage wooden cabinet with plenty of little nooks and shelves. I can already think of about a dozen things I’d put in it!

😂 Something Weird: This painted ceramic grandmother/witch crock holding wooden spoons. I’m not sure whether she looks more like Grandma or the witch next door! 😂

🧂 Something Pretty: A vintage six-piece spice set with blue-and-white graphics and those fabulous red lids. ❤️💙

🧳 Something You Suddenly Want: A vintage blue American Tourister case. You may not have anywhere to go, but suddenly you need a vintage suitcase. You know how that happens. 😉

❓ Something I’ve Never Seen Before: This vintage hand-crank pepper/spice mill! I had never seen one quite like it.

Six things. Six different reasons they caught my eye. And six more reasons to wander through the Merc! 👀

What if you were the maker? 👻

This week, we’re putting a little twist on Merc Makers and turning the spotlight on our customers!

The Merc is full of dolls just waiting for a little imagination to give them a whole new personality. Find an old-fashioned beauty, a sweet little baby, or a doll with just the right amount of creepy potential… then take her home and make her scary for Halloween! 🎃🕷️

Our graphic gives you a few ideas to get started—from spooky makeup and creepy details to distressing, dressing, and creating your very own haunted doll.

And these are just five of the dolls currently waiting for their transformation at the Merc. There are plenty more to choose from!
