Nobody kept score because everybody knew the deal.
Your neighbor knew plumbing, so he fixed your sink. Dad knew his way around a roof, so when that shed started leaking, he showed up with a ladder and a hammer.
Maybe somebody else had a truck. Somebody had a chainsaw. Somebody knew electrical. Somebody had the extension ladder everybody on the street borrowed.
Payment usually came in the form of returning the favor, a cold drink, or helping with something else six months later.
There wasn't an invoice.
There was just an understanding:
You helped people because eventually, everybody needed a hand.
