Well, you know I said how awesome McMinnville is? Yesterday for our NeeDoh release, everyone showed up to prove me right. The first kids arrived just after 3:00, and honestly - I did make them wait outside. There were five of them with no adult and they were tearing it up pretty good. Everyone got in line, I counted heads, and when it got to 48 (which was the number of NeeDohs we had) I let them in to form two lines. Something happened - I don't want to believe they were stolen off the counter by the kids who kept leaning over the counter, but I wasn't watching closely. What happened was, we ended up losing 5 dream drops (if your child came home with more than one, there should be a conversation about that.) The bummer part about that wasn't lost sales, but that people who waited in line didn't get theirs even when they were within the count.
Believe it or not, this is the set up for a feel good story, y'all!
So, here's what happened at my register. A woman at my register bought the last NeeDoh, and there was a dad right behind her holding a four(ish) year old boy explaining to the boy that they didn't quite get there in time. She turned and said, "I'd like to gift this to him. It's not for me, and the child I am buying it for doesn't even know it's coming." The dad said "Thanks, but you waited in line too. There are lots of toys to choose from, we'll find something cool." The four year old shyly smiled, headed over to look for the next good thing in his life, and went away happy.
Here's the other thing that struck me *I* knew something was funky with the count. *I* knew we didn't get through all the people we should have. *I* knew I hadn't sold extras to people, let people cut in, or stashed any away. The people in line didn't know any such thing, and not a single one of them accused, expressed frustration, or huffed away. There was some confusion. I was even confused before I saw that there were five still in inventory (didn't go through the register, but weren't in the store.) But no one got upset. Not even the four year old.
Thanks for being so awesome everyone. This experience is such a contrast to what some of my toy store friends are going though. You're the best.
XOXO Linda
