My Dad loved surf music even before the revival from the late 70's through the 90's. He was big on Dick Dale, The Ventures, The Sentinals, the Surfaris etc... and then got into groups like The Mermen, Los Straightjackets, and The Aquavelvets later. I remember him telling me about the Blue Stingrays as a kid, and that they were a Tom Petty side project. Their CD came with a blue pick and he gave it to me because I played guitar. I kept it for a long time and eventually lost it, only to get it back again in a recent record store day release. Needless to say I was pretty excited. He developed a relationship with Bob Keane from Del-Fi records, the man who discovered Ritchie Valens. What started as a request for some out of print records, turned into a friendship. He used to have conversations with him over the phone and via email about surf rock, blues and other music. I recently cracked open a box of his surf records and pulled this classic for a spin. Wipe Out by The Impacts, circa 1963 on Del-Fi. Quintessential Surf.

My Dad and I had an unhealthy obsession with Bob. We would go through phases where we would only listen to his music for weeks at a time. Sometimes playing the same albums over and over for days just absorbing it. We could relate to eachother and it sometimes felt like we were the only two people who felt this way about his music. I bought this album for him as a gift for Christmas one year but never got a chance to listen to it. This release has some great cuts of some of his most criminally underrated songs from this era. Jokerman, Sweetheart Like You, and New Danville Girl, that later became Brownsville Girl on Knocked Out Loaded. I used to worry that listening to the music we loved would be too hard after he passed, but as it turns out, the opposite is true. It makes me smile. In a way, it's like I get to visit with him everytime I drop the needle. Thanks Dad, love you dude. ❤️
