Shane Taylor is driving in from Montana. Bill Burke and Luke Swenson are coming from Idaho. So is Frank Edwards. Add Erik Fritz, also out of Montana, and most of this year's presenter lineup is coming from the same corner of the country to stand at forges in North Dakota for two days. Worth asking why.

Medora sits right at the edge of the badlands, the kind of landscape that looks carved on purpose. It's a small town, an easy walk end to end, and in late August the evening light is worth showing up early for. The forges are the reason to come. The town is a good reason to stay.

Two days, forges running from morning to evening, presenters rotating through demonstrations, and enough breaks to actually talk to the person standing next to you.

No lecture hall, a few rows of chairs.

Just the shop, the steel, and whoever else shows up.

You do not need to have forged anything before to come to this. Some people at last year's event were lifelong smiths. Some had never held a hammer with intent. Both groups had a good time.

If you're on the fence because you think you'll be out of place, you won't be.
