Which way your floor planks run is a design decision, and it's worth making before install day.

The usual rule of thumb is to run planks front to back from the front door, so the floor runs the long way as you walk in.

This house didn't fit that rule. It was wide instead of deep: a bedroom, a dining area, the kitchen, a living area, then a hallway to three more bedrooms, all side by side. Most of the walking goes along that length, so the planks run with it. Turned the other way, a long run of rooms like this can look short and choppy.

In a squarer room, the direction matters less.

The real question is what look you want for the people living there. Planning new floors? Tell us about your layout in the comments.

The decision that changed this kitchen: the peninsula came out and a big island went in.

The homeowners both cook and host often. The old peninsula had no real seating and left the cook cut off from guests, so the new layout opened the space, added cabinetry and centered everything on the island. It was planned around the existing plumbing stack, so the plumbing stayed where it was.

Melbourne-area kitchen and flooring remodel.

A zero-entry shower has no curb, but its floor still isn't flat.

In this primary bath, a corner shower and a jacuzzi came out so the homeowners could have one bigger shower with no step in. The shower floor now meets the bathroom floor, and its small mosaic tile is pitched toward a drain in the center.

That slope matters more without a curb, because there's nothing to hold water in. The pitch is what sends it to the drain, so it's planned before any tile goes down. How it's done depends on what's under the floor, which our plumbing trade partner checks early.

Thinking about zero-entry? Ask how the floor will slope to the drain. Questions about your own shower? Drop them in the comments.

Planning a shower remodel? Your existing glass door or panels may or may not fit the new shower. Glass has to fit the finished tile, curb and opening, so ask early whether yours can work with the new design.

Late additions still happen. They just add steps. Here's what a ceiling and a bathroom added mid-project changed on one of our kitchens, and why the full wish list belongs in the first meeting.

This kitchen had a large soffit over the upper cabinets, and nobody knew what was inside it.

So once the old cabinets came out, we took a look from underneath first. If something had been in there, we could have covered it right back up and kept the plan simple.

It was completely empty. So it came out, and the new slim shaker uppers now run all the way to the ceiling.

Check before you commit.
