I have loved the artwork and history of Egypt since my first visit to the Met museum so living in a city with a name rooted there that also has a pyramid on the river is pretty fly. The colors, the patterns, the figurative work and monuments of those dynasty’s were a a golden age of architectural and artistic innovation.

Break the lampshade Rules!

When you choose a smaller shade you are thinking beyond the standardized ratios rules regarding height and circumference of the shade to the base.
The bonus is you to create smaller pools of light around a room, you can tuck a lamp into smaller space with a petite shade which means you can fit a lot more lamp into a space to create a layered lighting rhythm around a room.

I have had a lifetime of white, cream, off white and beige so I do not have one stark white shade in my home.

Choose COLOR! I search for these shades and ones lined in fabric over plastic to give my desired softer glow. A gold lining is heaven and imagine a black pleated shade with a gold lining, a dramatic yet visually sophisticated statement.

Choose TEXTURE, think pleating, crosshatching and woven.

Choose EMBELLISHMENT, think fringe, tassels, alternating panels.

Choose SCALE! A smaller top than bottom over a drum shade and a shade that has a tall and thin profile is so modern and unusual .

Choose SHAPE! Look for structure in the many versions of pleated, bell and pagoda, see the chart to widen your knowledge of shades.

Does a shade have to match your room, not unless you want a limited palette and since the majority of shades are made in neutrals, you may not even be aware that COLOR is waiting for you in lamp-land!

Life is short so try something new to you now that meticulously designed spaces have given way to eclectic and personal decorating. (No shade to my designer friends!) Adding color to your shade game is exciting and fun.

My only rule is there are no rules, ok, one, NEVER see the switch. If the shade shows it, change the harp and you have a customized pairing.
