🌿 Plant of the Week
Neon Pothos (Epipremnum aureum 'Neon')
💚 Difficulty: ★☆☆☆☆ (Ridiculously Easy)

✅ Pros
• That electric chartreuse color brightens any room.
• One of the fastest-growing houseplants around.
• Incredibly forgiving if you occasionally forget about it.
• Happy trailing from a shelf or climbing a moss pole.
• Makes even the darkest corners look a little more alive.

What We Think You Need To Know:
• Too much direct sun can scorch those gorgeous neon leaves.
• In very low light, it starts looking more "lime green" than "neon."
• Can grow so fast you'll swear it adds a new vine every time you leave the room.
• Will happily climb anything if given the opportunity. And they get creative with the invasion. Seriously, google 'Funny Pothos'.

💧 Care Cheat Sheet
☀️ Light: Bright, indirect light keeps the color brightest. It'll tolerate lower light, but the neon glow will fade a bit.
💦 Water: Let the top inch or two of soil dry before watering. It forgives underwatering much better than overwatering.

🌫️ Humidity: Loves humidity but is perfectly content in average household conditions.

🌡️ Temperature: Typical indoor temperatures are ideal. Keep away from cold drafts.

🐶 Pets: Unfortunately, not pet friendly. Like all pothos, it's toxic if chewed by cats or dogs.

🌿 Feral Fern Fun Fact 🌿
Despite the eye-popping color, Neon Pothos isn't variegated! Those bright chartreuse leaves are packed with less chlorophyll than standard pothos, giving them their signature glow. It looks like it's been edited with a saturation slider... but that's just how it grows. People often think Neon Pothos is a Philodendron because of its heart-shaped leaves, but they're actually quite different. One easy clue? Pothos leaves are thicker and waxier, while Heart Leaf Philodendrons have softer, thinner leaves. If you're ever torn between the two, feel the leaf—it usually gives it away faster than the label does.

Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum)
🕷️ Difficulty: ★☆☆☆☆ (Beginner Proof)

What We Love About It:
• Nearly impossible to upset.
• Produces adorable baby plants ("spiderettes") like it's running a nursery.
• One of the fastest plants to fill out a hanging basket.
• Pet friendly, so your cat can make questionable life choices a little more safely.
• Tells you when it's thirsty by looking just a little dramatic—very considerate of it.

What We Think You Need To Know:
• Brown tips happen. Sometimes it's your water. Sometimes it's fertilizer. Sometimes it just woke up and chose crispy.
• Can become root-bound surprisingly fast.
• Those babies multiply... and suddenly everyone you know owns a spider plant because you won't stop giving them away.
• Doesn't appreciate sitting in soggy soil.

☀️ Light: Bright, indirect light is best, but it'll happily tolerate medium light.
💦 Water: Water when the top inch or so of soil dries out. Likes to dry slightly between drinks.
🌫️ Humidity: Appreciates humidity but grows just fine in average household conditions.
🌡️ Temperature: Normal indoor temperatures are perfect. Protect from frost.
🐶 Pets: Very pet friendly! One of the safest houseplants for homes with curious cats and dogs. In fact, if your kitty happens to love chewing on them- it might be time to have a talk as Spider Plants are hallucinogenic for them. The More You Know. Ha.Ha.

Spider plants were one of the stars of the famous NASA Clean Air Study back in the 1980s, which found they could remove certain airborne chemicals in sealed laboratory conditions. While your spider plant isn't going to replace your HVAC system, it's a fun piece of plant history—and a big reason they became one of the most popular houseplants in the world.

Well, folks... after keeping enough plants alive to qualify for sainthood, my mom has decided she'd like to take a vacation. That means tomorrow will be our last day open at The Feral Fern for a little while.

Don't worry, we're not disappearing! A good chunk of our jungle is temporarily relocating to The Unexpected Mercantile, so if you need a new leafy roommate, you'll still be able to shop many of our plants there while Mom is off pretending she doesn't have 300 things depending on her for water.

The Feral Fern will reopen, but our opening date is still up in the air. As soon as we know, you'll know.

So if you've been meaning to stop by, tomorrow's your chance to see the shop before it takes its own little vacation. Then you can feed your plant addiction at The Unexpected Mercantile-Formerly Little Shop of Hoarders, open Wed-Sat 9:30-5PM.

Heart Leaf Philodendron (Philodendron hederaceum)
💚 Difficulty: ★☆☆☆☆ (Beginner Proof)

What We Love About Them:
• One of the easiest houseplants you'll ever own.
• Gorgeous trailing vines that can grow several feet long.
• Forgives missed waterings better than most tropical plants.
• Happy climbing a moss pole or spilling from a hanging basket.
• Grows fast enough to make you feel like a plant wizard.
• Comes in a variety of super collectable colors such as the Neon and the Brasil.

What We Thing You Need To Know:
• If it gets leggy, it's politely telling you it wants more light.
• Will happily climb your walls, shelves, curtains, or unsuspecting family members if given the chance.
• Needs an occasional trim if you don't want vines stretching across the room. Those trimmed pieces can be placed in water to make a bunch of new plants!

🌿 Feral Fern Fun Fact🌿
Despite the name Philodendron, the word literally means "tree lover." It comes from the Greek philo (love) and dendron (tree). In the wild, Heart Leaf Philodendrons spend their lives climbing trees toward the rainforest canopy using aerial roots. That moss pole in your living room? You're basically pretending your IKEA shelf is a tropical rainforest.

Good lawd, this Arkansas sun isn’t playing and it’s only 9am. Here are the shop favorites for the week, my suggestion for you is the Neon Heartleaf Philodendron. There are reasons but you’ll only understand when you hold its beauty in your hands.

Moonshine Snake Plant (Dracaena trifasciata 'Moonshine')
🌕 Difficulty: ★☆☆☆☆ (Practically Unkillable)

What We Love About Them:
• Gorgeous silvery-green leaves that look almost frosted.
• Thrives on neglect. Seriously.
• One of the best low-light houseplants around.
• Doesn't mind if you forget about it for a week... or three.
• Slow grower, so it stays tidy without demanding constant repotting.

What We Think You Need to Know:
• The fastest way to kill it is by loving it too much.
• Hates wet feet and will rot if left sitting in soggy soil.
• Grows slowly, so patience is part of the package.
• Bright light helps keep that beautiful silver coloring. In deep shade it'll turn more green.

☀️ Light: Anything from low light to bright indirect light. The brighter the light, the prettier the color.

🌿 Feral Fern Fun Fact
This plant is commonly known as Mother In Law Tongue. And I'm sure you can guess why. In the late 1800's the Victorian folks got real cheeky with plant names. The long slender, but pointed and unbending leaves were reminiscent of many Mother In Laws. Other fun plant names from the time are the Hen & Chick and Bachelor Button's.
