Two of the year’s most memorable side-by-sides.

What’s interesting about these showings is how much our perception of California ageability tends to suffer from the vagaries of provenance. When bottles are pristinely kept — cellared with the same attention afforded great Burgundy or Bordeaux — they often more than hold their own.

Like this 1959 Charles Krug Winery that edged out 1959 Château Talbot off the list last Saturday.

Built-to-last wines across vintages and varietals and among the highest hit rates for Old California available to us. A recent 1974 Monte Bello felt like it was just beginning to explain itself after three hours‘ decanting.
