Creating "signature scents" since the 1970's. 23,000+ perfumes created for customers over last 34 years. Essense originally began as perfume-oil work shop called "Body Scents" in Woodstock, New York during the late 1970's. After moving to Martha's Vineyard in the early 1980's, it became "Essence Natural Perfumes," and then morphed into "Essense of Martha's Vineyard," in 1991, after a 3rd change in ownership, but continued to operate its front porch retail location at The Colonial Inn in Edgartown until 2001. Then a 4th location change brought Essense to its tranquil forested hideaway lot, on the edge of the Manuel F. Correllus State Forest of over 5000 acres. Essense began "by appointment-only" when the Oak Bluffs Caribbean-inspired green tin-roofed apothecary shop was built to house the 400-plus collection of old apothecary bottles filled with magical perfume oils. Essense was the first and original custom-blending perfume bar on the island of Martha's Vineyard, though there were several imitators and spin-offs. In 2013, Essense of Martha's Vineyard became Essense Parfumerie after its 5th location change, opening the current location just outside Meredith Village, New Hampshire. Near Lake Winnipesaukee, now Essense is housed inside its renovated, historic 1796 barn. Essense Parfumerie maintains posted seasonal hours May-September, but is open year-round by appointment only. Here's the latest perfume [oil] to become part of the permanent Essense collection. This perfume has been "on trial" for a couple of years. People seem to love it, and it's become one of my personal favorites. This designer-inspired fragrance emulates
the 2007 perfume by designer Tom Ford.

Oud comes from the resinous beads collected from the outer bark of the Southeastern Agarwood Tree. The scent varies from Woody, similar to Sandalwood, to smokey, like a campfire.

Although this particular scent was created as a "masculine" fragrance, I find it's completely unisex, smelling really good on both men and women.

The top notes include Pepper, Cardamon, and Rosewood.

The middles notes include Oud, Sandalwood, and Vetiver.

The base notes are Tonka Bean, Vanilla, and Amber.

This perfume can be used as a base for creating an entirely new Signature Scent.

Possibilities include the additions of sweet edible notes, like Sugar, Cotton Candy, Vanilla, Waffles, Pumpkin, Mimosa & Tonka Bean, or Toasted S'mores...

For those that love the smells of woods and trees, more Woodsy notes can be added, like additional Sandalwoods, of which Essense has many. Or Teak? Or Cedar?

Flowers? One of the dark Rose scents, like Somalian Rose? Or Tunisian Jasmine? Exotic African Violet or Tiger Lily?

Spice it up with Tunisian O***m, more Pepper, Coco-Coriander, Nutmeg, or Ginger?

This is the final "Walk-In Saturday" of the 2026 Summer.

Marking the completion of my 35th Summer as Perfumer/Owner of Essense, through 3 location changes. This has been the busiest summer season since the 2020 pandemic...

An Essense trade-marked perfume called "Blueberry Letter 22," has been very popular during "Walk-In Saturdays" this summer.

This perfume is near and dear to my heart, because it took me 22 years to create. Launched in 2013, I consider this my personal "signature scent." However, I'm pleased to share it with others who love it as much as I do. Everybody should smell good and feel happy doing so! 💜

The base notes of this fragrance include White Patchouli Flower and a mixture of imported Ambers. The Middle and Top Notes are comprised of an Oak-Casket Aged Blueberry, aged similarly, like a fine w**e might be. This Blueberry is deep, with Woodsy/Oak accords.🫐🌳🫐🌳🫐🌳🫐

As a teenager, one of my favorite songs was "Strawberry Letter 23" by Brothers Johnson. It's a love story in song, about a young woman who writes 22 letters, heavily-scented with Strawberry, to her boyfriend. The young man, the boyfriend and 1970's songwriter, answers her 22nd letter by song, which is "Strawberry Letter 23." 🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓

What's "OUD" you may wonder?

The Essense Barn was the location of a private birthday party on Saturday. 🍸🎊🍸🎊🍸

Everybody had lots of fun, with music, drinks, and food.

Everybody created custom-blended perfumes for themselves.

The most popular scents for this party ~ again included fresh,
citrus fragrances ~ the most popular being SUMMER MARTINI, a fresh-smelling perfume made of LEMON, LIME, RASPBERRY, VODKA, and GIN notes.

GRAPEFRUIT, RAIN, BUTT NAKED, and various light MUSKS were also popular fragrance choices.
