MY FIRST SONY.
I chose Tulane University in New Orleans for 3 reasons. You could drink when you were 18, the weather was warm like Miami where I grew up, and Tulane had a liberal arts program in case I wanted to switch from Electrical Engineering.
Turns out, I nearly. flunked freshman 5 hour calculus, which was all math. I was interested in music and Hi-fi. So, I switched to Biology. Herpetology (reptiles) had been my hobby. I never wanted to be a doctor. I finished with a degree in Biology.
I got this Sony TC-260 reel to reel as a high school graduation present. Here it is in my dorm room at Sharp Hall at Tulane. .. My roommate started working at The Mushroom record store, and so did I. I found this old barber shop a block away and rented it for $75 a month.
And now 53 years after opening that first store, and a year and a half after semi-retiring, I am again going to have regular retail store hours (although limited) because people keep calling for some Sound Advice.

THIS IS THE AUDIO-TECHNICA AT-LP120 USB
DIRECT DRIVE TURNTABLE
BACK IN STOCK AFTER MONTHS WITH NO INVENTORY
ON SALE.... $449 NOW $399
get a system from us and get an even better bundle price

This is a very high quality, audiophile grade, turntable... and one of the best audio buys available.
Direct Drive, means no belts to wear and and very little motor noise. Belt drive turntables use a belt to isolate the vibrations produced by inexpensive motors from reaching the platter, which the needle can pick up and send out your speakers as motor noise. This is called RUMBLE.
It has a counter balanced arm with detachable head shell so the phono cartridge can be changed, the arm re-balanced and it is S-shaped for very low tracking error. the detachable head shell also means you can easily remove it to clean the stylus.
It weighs over 20 pounds with a heavy base, thick anti-resonant feet and comes with hinged detachable dustcover.
It has a built In phono preamp to allow hookup if your amp or receiver does not have a direct phono input. It can be switched off.
It has an A to D converter that hooked up to your computer can be CD quality copies of your records.

Facebook posts no longer show in chronological order, so I am posting this old TV commercial I did on turntables. Most of these turntables are still current models, but thanks to Trump's tariffs have gone way up in price. BUT, we have some inventory at pre-tariff prices. So, give us a call. 504 834 5400. We will explain direct drive vs. belt drive and steer in to a great turntable so you can enjoy all your vinyl. We have receivers, amps and great speakers to go with it. WE RUN THE WIRES AND INSTALL IT ALL TOO.

Some of you might have stopped by the Alterman Audio store at 3101 N Causeway Blvd in Metairie. Our retail store and showroom is empty. We have changed our way of doing business. Finding someone to man the store who knows something about audio and
tv is pretty hard to do these days. We are doing business, (and a lot of business) over the phone. After all these years folks take my recommendations and just buy it. My main man Eddie, over 30 years runs the wires and does the installation. Nobody has more expertise. We have a few systems set up to listen to in are warehouse upstairs and doing by appointment only... So ... looking to buy a new TV ... get back into vinyl and buy a stereo turntable system or do a real nice home theater surround sound ... CALL ME: HENRY ALTERMAN ... for some Sound Advice. Call 10 am to 6 pm seven days a week. I will be glad to answer all your questions

It was February 1973!. FIFTY ONE YEARS AGO. I was standing on a ladder, painting the Alterman Audio sign shown in this photo. A car drove up, and I sold that guy an Acoustic Research AR-XA turntable.
That was the first official sale of Alterman Audio.
I recently found the actual receipt.
So ... how can we still be here after 51 years competing againsts giants like Best Buy, Amazon, and all the other audio storews that used to be in New Orleans.

Meet the Audio-technica ATLP3. It has been our top selling turntable for 3 reasons. 1. It's a fully automatic (belt drive) turntable. 2. It has built-in Bluetooth so without an amp or receiver, you can listen to vinyl with Bluetooth headphones. 3. Price. When introduced it was $349, but now only $299.
While many low price turntables are automatic, the quality of the tonearm and its friction causes record wear and poor sound. We call them record grinders.
Quality automatic turntables are very rare.
The start button is on the outside of the dustcover, allowing for easy access. Pressing it will make the tone arm lift, glide over to the record, gently land, and start playing the record. At the end, it will reset and shut off.
It has a built-in phono preamp, so it can hook up to a CD or line input on an amp or receiver. It also comes with a detachable headshell so you can easily clean and replace the needle.
It comes in black or white.
