✨ What is Angelic Reiki? ✨

Angelic Reiki is an energy-healing system centered around working with angelic consciousness and Reiki energy. Dowsing Rods Through the Ages ✨

Dowsing rods have a surprisingly long and unusual history. Also called divining rods or “water witching,” they have been used in attempts to locate water, minerals, metals, tunnels and other things hidden beneath the ground.

Ancient Egypt & China: Dowsing has long been associated with ancient Egyptian and Chinese traditions. The USGS itself describes the history of divining rods as reaching back to ancient civilizations including Egypt and China, although evidence for exactly how these ancient practices worked is limited.

1556, Europe: One of the clearest early European records comes from Georgius Agricola’s De Re Metallica, which discussed the use of divining rods by miners searching for mineral deposits.

1917, United States: Dowsing became such a persistent subject that USGS hydrologist Arthur J. Ellis published The Divining Rod: A History of Water Witching, with a Bibliography. After reviewing investigations into the practice, Ellis concluded there was no reliable scientific evidence that dowsing could consistently locate underground water or minerals.

1960s, Vietnam War: This is where the history gets especially strange. U.S. Marines experimented with L-shaped metal rods, including bent coat hangers, in attempts to locate Viet Cong tunnels, mines and other buried objects. The technique was never officially adopted as a reliable military method, and an Army review concluded it wasn’t militarily practical.

Today: Dowsing hasn’t disappeared. People still use L-shaped rods, forked branches and pendulums for water finding, divination and modern spiritual practices. Scientific evidence has not established dowsing as a reliable method of detecting underground objects or water, but its extraordinarily persistent history makes it one fascinating little piece of human culture.

From ancient traditions, to Renaissance miners, to a U.S. government investigation, to Marines walking through Vietnam with bent metal rods… dowsing has had one hell of a journey through history.
