Rare. Controversial. Historically inconvenient.

The Elephant Hide Birkin belongs to a chapter of Hermès history that feels almost impossible through a modern lens.

But the material story did not begin with the Birkin.

Elephant hide appears in documented Hermès pieces decades earlier—including an Elephant Hide Sellier Kelly 35 catalogued to 1960.

An extraordinary object from a very different era.

BEFORE THE BIRKIN

1960: Elephant Hide Sellier Kelly 35.

1984: The Birkin is created.

Twenty-four years separate the two.

The documented 1960 Kelly matters because it establishes something important: elephant hide was already part of Hermès’ material vocabulary long before the Birkin existed.

The material came first.

A MATERIAL ANOMALY

Elephant hide occupies one of the most unusual chapters in Hermès history.

Its presence at the house predates the Birkin itself: a documented Elephant Hide Sellier Kelly 35 dates to 1960—twenty-four years before the Birkin was created.

The surviving Elephant Birkins therefore raise a fascinating question: where, exactly, do they belong in the early history of the Birkin?

Our collector’s thesis: among its earliest and most extraordinary experiments in exotic material.

Rare. Controversial. Historically inconvenient.

And precisely the kind of object The Collector’s Sketchbook was created to examine.

THE OBJECT

Elephant Hide Birkin 40.

A material from another era. A chapter that cannot simply be recreated.

This example forms part of the Privé Porter private collection.

Whatever one thinks of the material today, surviving examples remain extraordinary historical objects—evidence of a very different period in luxury, collecting and the evolution of the Birkin.
