Next month in Florida, the Micanopy Fall Festival kicks off for a full weekend of food, shopping, music, and small-town fun! More than 200 booths will line Cholokka Boulevard with handmade crafts, original artwork, jewelry, plants, decorations, gifts, and creations from artists and makers from around the Southeast. You can grab festival food and sweet treats while walking the street, listen to live music, and stop by the old-fashioned auction where donated vendor items are sold to help local programs. Cholokka Boulevard closes to vehicles for the festival, letting the entire downtown become one big walking event. Micanopy itself adds plenty to the experience, with old buildings, antique shops, live oaks, and hanging Spanish moss. The town was established in 1821 and was named for Seminole leader Micanopy. The 51st festival runs Saturday, October 31, from 9–5 and Sunday, November 1, from 9–4. Admission is free!

Some Florida towns feel like they made a quiet agreement decades ago to just stop changing, and Micanopy is one of them, brick storefronts and thick oak canopies standing almost exactly the way they have since the 1800s.

Founded in the 1820s, it's one of the oldest inland towns in the state, and it never got the interstate exit or the strip mall boom that reshaped so many of its neighbors. What it got instead was antique shops that have been family-run for generations, a Spanish moss canopy so dense it turns the main street into a green tunnel by midafternoon, and a pace of life that makes visitors instinctively start walking slower within about a block. It's also where parts of Doc Hollywood were filmed, if you're the kind of person who notices those things.

Towns like this are getting rarer as development pushes further into what used to be considered the middle of nowhere, which makes the ones still standing feel worth protecting. 🌳

The Shop is open!

If you want to feel what Florida was like long before the theme parks and high rises, drive the shaded main street of Micanopy. 🌳 Settled in 1821, it is the oldest inland town in the state, and its single historic street still runs beneath a canopy of enormous live oaks draped in Spanish moss.

The old brick storefronts here have been given new life as antique shops, bookstores, and little cafes, but the bones of the place are wonderfully unchanged. ☕ Ferns spill from porches, an old bicycle leans against a lamppost, and the light filters down soft and green through the moss. It is the kind of town where you slow your steps without meaning to, where an afternoon can disappear browsing dusty shelves and swapping stories with shopkeepers who know every building's history.

Micanopy has served as a backdrop for films and drawn generations of travelers looking for the real Florida, the one that existed before the interstate. It wears its age gracefully, quietly proud of being first. Have you ever wandered into a small Florida town and wished you could stay longer?
