The mulch piled up against tree trunks in American landscapes β€” the volcano shape β€” is one of the most widespread tree-killing practices in residential gardening. And it is visible in most neighbourhoods across the country. 🌳

Here is what it actually does:

Tree bark is designed to be exposed to air. When mulch is piled against the trunk and kept constantly moist, the bark begins to decay. Fungal pathogens enter through the softened bark. Root girdling develops β€” a root circling the trunk base through the moist mulch layer that physically strangles the tree over 10 to 15 years.

The damage is completely invisible until the tree begins to decline β€” by which point the vascular system is already compromised.

The correct mulch ring:
βœ“ Flat donut shape β€” not a volcano
βœ“ 2 to 3 inches deep maximum
βœ“ Extends outward to the drip line
βœ“ 6-inch gap maintained between mulch and trunk bark
βœ“ Trunk flare always visible above the soil line

Light pollution is the human-made alteration of outdoor light levels from those occurring naturally. Light pollution disrupts wildlife, impacts human well-being, wastes money and energy, contributes to climate change, and blocks our view of the universe.

Steve Mariconda, an avid astronomer and public health care professional, had a profound experience the first time he saw the Milky Way in a pristine sky. Away from street lights, floodlights on commercial properties, car headlights, and other human-made interference that combine to make the nighttime environment unnaturally bright, he had a keen sense of something bigger.

Mariconda advocates that light pollution is relatively easy to fix. Using fewer and more targeted light sources and replacing white light bulbs with yellow ones are just a few of the recommendations he will make in this program.

This will be recorded!

I am not a threat in the dark.
That piercing scream in the night is a red fox vixen calling for a mate.

β€’ Female foxes make this scream during a short winter breeding window
β€’ The call carries long distances and sounds shocking to human ears
β€’ Males answer with sharp barks, then the forest goes quiet again
β€’ This vocal phase lasts only a few weeks in January and February

What happens next
β€’ A den is prepared for kits that will be born in early spring
β€’ Red fox parents raise their young together
β€’ After mating season, nighttime screaming stops completely

Why it sounds so alarming
β€’ Fox calls are designed to travel far, not to sound pleasant
β€’ Cold night air carries sound farther, making it seem closer than it is
β€’ Most people only hear it a few nights per year

Winter forests are not silent β€” they are full of seasonal wildlife behavior that has happened for thousands of years, even when houses now sit nearby.
