Long Gone

There were those days that I prepared
I had to be ready for what was to come
Each and every day unexpected
Running away in fear

Then those in which I repaired
Replaced myself into someone new
Someone I wish I had known
Yet now that I have grown
I witness my growth
I see the change

Slowly I turn and rearrange
Make these thoughts forever new
Until I realize that until I change my future
Take a sledgehammer to the past

I will see the rubble
The past has crumbled
I am new
I look in the mirror
I finally like what I see
Looking back at me

She is happy
She is smiling
Laughter emerges
Instead of pain

A long and rocky road it has been
Yet each stone overturned
Examined to face the past and learn
I found my mistakes
Faced every fear

All is not gone
I am still at work
Yet realize I am unexpected
Now I am so very protected
Not only by those I love
Yet also from up above
