If you know anything about the hobby it’s that everyone collects differently. This is certainly one of those cases!
Starting in 2003, Topps began putting Topps Black parallels in their flagship product with a serial number of only 52. Why 52? Because 1952 was the first year of the standard Topps cards (Topps had a slightly different product they put out in 1951). Each year after 2003, Topps would increase the print run of their Topps Black parallels by one. There is one silly exception to this annual tradition. In 2007, Topps base cards had black borders, so there was not a Topps Black parallel made. Instead, Topps continued the annual tradition by substituting Topps Black with Topps Copper. It has been the only year Topps has done this…so far.
These Topps Black parallels are so sought after that when Topps made the ridiculous decision to discontinue these cards in their 2025 Topps Series One release, there was so much backlash that Topps actually reininstituted these parallels in their Series Two release from the same year, including the Series One players within the Series Two release.
If you know the staff at the shop, you probably know who this little collection belongs to! Beginning the chase over a dozen years ago, this collector set out to procure every base flagship Black Parallel of Miguel Cabrera throughout the years. By 2022, he was finally caught up and only needed to collect the new products as they were released.
Little side note - while Topps Black parallels WERE included in 2003, they were NOT included in the 2003 Topps Traded set, where Miggy was included.
