At KDC Associates we believe design begins with understanding how people actually live.

When KDC Associates was asked to design the outdoor therapy courtyard for Permian Basin Rehability Center Permian Basin Rehab Center, the goal was never simply to create an outdoor space. The goal was to create a place where recovery could become reality.

During the rehabilitation of a family member following a hip injury, KDC Principal Kelly Cook witnessed something important: patients could excel in controlled therapy environments, but often struggled when returning to everyday life.

Walking on uneven ground, navigating slopes and changes in elevation, getting into and out of a vehicle and moving through the unpredictable conditions people encounter every day were all key elements of life after an injury or with a predisposition that were analyzed and strategically designed for.

Those observations helped shape the design of this courtyard.

The space incorporates real-world challenges and opportunities for practice, allowing both adult and pediatric patients to build confidence and functional skills in a safe environment. From varied walking surfaces and grade changes to everyday mobility scenarios, each element was designed with purpose.

Successful rehabilitation isn’t measured by what happens inside a therapy room, it’s measured by what happens when someone returns to living their life.

At KDC, we believe landscape architecture has the power to improve not only places—but outcomes.

In 2025, we expanded our presence into Lubbock and the Dallas–Fort Worth area—continuing our mission of changing the landscape (literally) through strategic, forward-thinking design.
