It’s What I’m Reading Wednesday! In preparation for book club Tuesday, October 6 and in honor of Hobbit Day (we’re observing it Saturday, September 19), I’m reading There’s a Hole in My Bucket. It’s a memoir written by Royd Tolkien, a great-grandson of J.R.R. Tolkien. So moving and yet spew-your-second breakfast funny!

We don’t have this book in stock at the moment, but I’m working on getting it. It’s a little hard to come by.

There’s a Whole in My Bucket
By Royd Tolkien
As the great-grandson of J.R.R. Tolkien, Royd grew up on a diet of storytelling and entertainment, with the characters of The Hobbit firmly entrenched in his imagination.

Following acting roles in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Royd was inspired to become a producer. He went on to produce two films and was developing more when, in 2012, his younger brother, Mike, was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (ALS). Royd put everything on hold to care for Mike until he passed away, on January 28, 2015.

Since then, Royd has completed There’s a Hole in My Bucket, a feature length documentary that follows his journey around New Zealand fulfilling the bucket list bequeathed to him by Mike. This book is the story of Royd caring for his brother as he battled ALS and Royd’s subsequent adventure fulfilling Mike’s 50-item bucket list after Mike passed away. Royd lives in Wales.

Into Your Hands, O Lord
By Audra Dahl
Trusting God is often talked about but rarely explained in a way that shows how to do it. Learning to trust God isn’t easy, but it doesn’t have to be complicated.

In this insightful and hope-filled book, Audra Dahl guides readers through the following five essential characteristics of trust. These pillars help you identify where your trust is strong, where it is fragile, and how to strengthen it:

• God’s character

• God’s knowledge and understanding of you

• God’s goodwill

• God’s ability

• God’s history of working in your life

She explains how to release control and form a secure attachment and healthy dependence on God. then she provides a clear, biblical framework for building resilient trust that is tested and grounded in truth. Whether you want to build a relationship with God for the very first time or are seeking a deeper and stronger relationship with Him, this book is for you.

Tatay’s Team: The Kindness Club is the first in a series of fiction books for kids ages 8 to 12. 11-year-old Joan (pronounced JoAhn in the Filipino language) struggles to fit in at her new middle school. She is not bullied or the object of cruel barbs; the other students just ignore her. She goes to class with her head down, eats alone in the cafeteria, and tries desperately not to draw attention to herself. By accident, she and a coach discover she has a talent for sports (softball). She joins the team and finds acceptance. This prompts her to want to include others who are also alone and struggling to belong. Her team begins a Kindness Club with one rule: The outsider does not come to them. They go to the outsider.

About the authors:
Among many other things, J.W. Jones coached fast-pitch softball at several Texas schools, including Italy, Red Oak, and Abbott. JoAnn Miller has a rich background in history and coaching softball. The story draws inspiration from Filipino culture and proverbs, reflecting the author’s commitment to sharing meaningful life lessons through kids’ fiction.

It’s What I’m Reading Wednesday! My husband and I started listening to The Road to Tender Hearts by Annie Hartnett last weekend — on a road trip of all things. It’s tragic, hilarious, poignant and completely original.

What are you reading this week?

The Road to Tender Hearts
By Annie Hartnett

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A darkly comic and warm-hearted novel about an old man on a cross-country mission to reunite with his high school crush—bringing together his adult daughter, two orphaned kids, and a cat who can predict death—by the beloved author of Rabbit Cake and Unlikely Animals

At sixty-three years old, million-dollar lottery winner PJ Halliday would be the luckiest man in Pondville, Massachusetts, if it weren’t for the tragedies of his life: the sudden death of his eldest daughter and the way his marriage fell apart after that. Since then, PJ spends both his money and his time at the bar, and he probably doesn’t have much time left—he’s had three heart attacks already.

But when PJ reads the obituary of his old romantic rival, he realizes his high school sweetheart, Michelle Cobb, is finally single again. Filled with a new enthusiasm for life, PJ decides he’s going to drive across the country to the Tender Hearts Retirement Community in Arizona to win Michelle back.

Before PJ can hit the road, tragedy strikes Pondville, leaving PJ the sudden guardian of his estranged brother’s grandchildren. Anyone else would be deterred from the planned trip, but PJ figures the orphaned kids might benefit from getting out of town. PJ also thinks he can ask Sophie, his adult daughter who’s adrift in her twenties, to come along to babysit. And there’s one more surprise addition to the roster: Pancakes, a former nursing home therapy cat with a knack of predicting death, who recently turned up outside PJ’s home.

This could be the second chance PJ has long hoped for—a fresh shot at love and parenting—but does he have the strength to do both those things again? It’s very possible his heart can’t take it.
