Apollo 8 - First Manned Lunar Orbit
Launched on December 21, 1968 Apollo 8 became the first manned spacecraft to journey beyond Earth's orbit. Its 3 man crew of Frank Borman, James Lovell and William Anders were the first astronauts to reach and orbit the Moon. They were the first to witness "Earthrise" from the backside of the moon, which was the inspiration for this US postage stamp. On Christmas Eve, the crew made a television broadcast where they read the first 10 verses from the Book of Genesis. At the time this broadcast was the most-watched event in television history!

Remember years ago when Holiday mail included colorful Christmas Seals to help raise public awareness and provide funding for charities caring for those suffering from respiratory diseases? Many countries throughout the world participated and created their own unique and interesting designs. These old popular seals included the double barred Cross of Lorraine, the international symbol for the fight against Tuberculosis adopted in the 1920s. www.kenmorestamp.com/topicals/religion/christmas-seals

Walt Whitman
On this day 200 years ago American poet Walt Whitman was born in West Hills New York. One of his most famous poems, "Leaves of Grass", was a radical departure from standard verse of the time and many of his poems reflected on loss or healing. Considered the father of free verse, Walt Whitman's genius wasn't universally recognized until after his death. He was honored on this 5¢ US stamp in the 1940s Famous American series..

Thanks to All our Heroes
Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day to honor the soldiers who died during the Civil War. In 1915 Moina Michael wrote a poem that linked the red Poppy with the veterans who gave their lives for their country.
"We cherish too, the Poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led,
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies."
She also came up with the idea to wear red poppies on Memorial day to honor those who died serving the nation during war. She sold poppies to her friends and co-workers with the money going to benefit servicemen in need. In 1922 the VFW became the first veterans’ organization to nationally sell poppies.
